Chapter 56

"I am too. I just hope Maya likes it. If she doesn't, I will feel bad."

"Let's think positive. Nothing will ruin this for us or Maya. We just have to-" Vanessa starts ranting but gets interrupted.

"Hey son!" my dad approaches to greet us. At his side, Amelia's mom is holding his hand. So much for "nothing will ruin the night." I forgot he would come since he was a business partner with Vanessa. We didn't make sure he was kicked off the guest list.

"Sir, I think it's better if you don't call me son from now on," I say as calmly as I can.

"Son, please move past that-"

"You have no common sense? How can I ignore the fact that you two ruined your families for an affair? You two could have at least broken things off with your previous partners. Please don't ask me to move on when what you did leave my mother in a critical state," I look at them with hatred. Vanessa remains silent by my side. She grabs my hand tightly as support.

"Fine, we will talk another day. After all, we are here to celebrate the birthday of the daughter you never told me about. I do have to remind you that we need to talk eventually. My company is really for you," my father explains. He knew I wasn't going to budge.

Apart from that, I knew what he meant. He was ready to pass down the company to me. I was ready to take it, as long as I left him broke with his mistress. My father and Amelia's mom leave us, they were heading for a table too. I wasn't too worried about my mom seeing them. My mom grew to hate him, she doesn't care about his life anymore.

"I hate your father so much, I hope he falls down or something," Vanessa scoffs as she imitates how Amelia's mom walks in heels.

"Leave it up to Noah. He will pull one of his pranks," I joke.

"You're right. However, Maya is outside! My mom texted ten minutes ago. Should I send the signal?" Vanessa asks.

"Yep, Ethan will go get her."

"Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us! However, Maya is outside. I need for all of you to remain quiet until she walks in, please?" Vanessa yells to everyone in the room. Ethan runs past us knowing it was his turn to lead them into the house. The room becomes quiet, everyone is in the corner of their seats. We were all impatiently waiting for Maya's reaction.

One of the staff turned off the lights on cue. Amelia, Emily, and Noah walked towards us quietly.

"I'm about to laugh," Amelia chuckles quietly.

"I know, it's hard to remain quiet in this silence," Emily agrees.

"What if she gets scared?" Noah asks.

"Let's hope not. Oh no, what if my baby cries?" Vanessa whispers.

"If she cries, I'll carry her on my shoulders to make her laugh," I suggest.

"You better be ready Asher because I can hear their footsteps," Amelias whispers nervously.

"Okay, one, two, three!" Ethan yells as he opens the door. My heart was about to leave my chest at this point. I wasn't sure what to expect.

"Happy birthday!" the whole house yells. Many confetti cannons were going off at the same time.

Maya gets startled at the sound of many people yelling. Her eyebrows furrow indicating she is confused. Her face breaks into a wide smile once she realizes why so many people were here.

"Mommy, daddy! Thank you!" Maya yells as she runs to hug our legs. I squat down to match her height. I pick her up and see her bright smile.

"Do you like it, angel?" Vanessa asks. She nods excitedly and looks at the fully decorated room.
