He brought up the pole and slammed it into its head as I cut across its slimy, thick skin making it howl in pain. Dark brown oozed out of the creature and I backed off when I saw Minho free himself.

"COME ON JEFF!" I urged, grabbing his shirt but something pulled him back making me lose my balance. I face planted on the stone pathway with a screaming Jeff in front of me. I scrambled to my feet. I have to save Jeff. Clint's already gone. I reached out a hand when two arms wrapped around my waist. "NO!" I cried struggling against them to get loose as doors started to close.

"Love, calm down!" It was Newt. It took a second for me to realize I wasn't getting him back. I'd not only failed Alby, but I also failed Jeff. My body became dead weight causing Newt having to drag me back to avoid being crushed by the falling stone walls. Grievers still chased after us but we were a safe bit away. Then Thomas threw a spear into a griever and the door took care of the rest.

Then darkness. Pitch black darkness. Then behind us Teresa, I assume, opened the door. A dim, but bright light started at the door. Had we really done it?

I slowly stood up as I clutched Newt's hand. The group walked forward and through the old military style door into an empty hallway filled with pipes running horizontally on the wall. Then more lights clicked on, running the length of the hallways as far as we could see.

We continued to walk in silence. Only the pipes rattled and water droplets ruined the silence. We stopped in front of another old door before Thomas reached for the door and pushed it open. The whoops of an alarm filled the dim hall as we walked in. A body... why didn't that surprise me?

Blood was splattered on the wall next to the dead man. We walked slowly past a window into a room where two dead bodies laid, covered with white tarps. I must have stared a little too long because Newt grabbed my shoulder and softly edged me forward.

"What happened here?" Winston whispered, fear evident as we came across another dead body. No one answered. No one knew. In another room of shattered glass and dead bodies, we came across monitors with bullet holes inside. Surprisingly they were still projecting a very disturbing sight.

Sparks crackled, quite literally, like from the ceiling and shit, as Newt Fry and I walked up to some monitors. My heart faltered as I saw security footage of gladers and the glade itself.

"So they were watching us." Newt scoffed. "This whole time." He looked at me but I didn't look back. My eyes were glued on the blood-stained screens. Newt wrapped his arms around me from behind and placed his chin on my shoulder.

"I lov-"

"Hello," I turned around at the unfamiliar voice. "My name is Dr. Ava Paige." I furrowed my eyebrows at the tv like screen projecting an image of a woman. Why did she look familiar? "I'm the director of operations of the World Catastrophe Killzone Department. If you're watching this, that means you've successfully completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you but circumstances seem to have prevented it." Her face was grave, and wrinkled with age. But she still looked young with her blonde hair tied neatly in a bun and a white lab coat on. "I'm sure by now you must all be very confused, angry, frightened. I can only assure you that everything that's happened to you, everything we've done to you, it was all done for a reason. You won't remember, but the sun has scorched our world. Billions of lives lost to the fire." The screen showed pictures and videos of people on their death beds, of deserted wastelands filled with sand. Dr. Paige talked about how the global scale was destroyed by famine and destruction as haunting images floated on the screen like it wasn't a big deal. But my eyes were huge and terrified. Now I looked at Newt but he didn't look back. His eyes on the horror-filled screen.
