"We've had this argument already, I'm not having it again." I hit end call, but not before I heard 'No, Anna, wait!'
"Who was that?" Laurel asked curiously.
I didn't want to lie to her... But, I also didn't want to tell her the truth. "Just... just my best friend. Don't worry about it."
Laurel and I finished getting our things, I even got a spare toothbrush for Laurel, and we headed out again.
"Oh my gosh I totally forgot! Are you okay with dogs?" I asked as she and I searched for the blue ball in Ethan's front yard.
"I love them!"
"Good! Well, There's one here so... yeah."
"OOH! What's their name?!" Laurel asked, obviously really excited.
"His name's Pence."
"Oh my gosh he sounds adorable!"
"He really is. I know he's going to love you." We found the ball, got to the key inside, and unlocked Ethan's front door. I heard the rattling of Pence's collar as I shut the door, and he came dashing around the corner.
"Hi Spence!!" I said as he jumped up on me. He switched to Laurel and she greeted him too. Pence dashed between Laurel and myself for a second before starting to play with Laurel.

Food was made, and eaten. Then Laurel and I got ready for bed. Ethan had 2 guest bedrooms, and a master. He normally had friends over, so he had a bunch of bedrooms. But Laurel and I were going to sleep in Ethan's master. It was a king bed so we could each have a side and it wouldn't be weird.
"Leah?"
"Sì?" (Yes in Italian)
"Do you pray before you go to bed?" It wasn't the question I was expecting obviously. I was a member of the LDS church, I learned about it through Brock and Jack. And I assumed that it was the Ravengers that were religious, but I guess it was from both the Kreezys and the Ravengers that Jack got into it.
"Yes. Do you?" Laurel nodded. "Normally with mommy and daddy."
"Do you want to pray with me?" Laurel looked up at me, wringing her hands. Then nodded. "We can pray! Do... you want me to say it?" She nodded again. "Okay.
"Dear Heavenly Father, we thank thee for this day. We thank thee that we're here, and together. That Laurel was able to find me, and that I can protect her now." Laurel snuggled close to me, squirming onto my lap. "We're grateful for the fact that Laurel knew to come and find me. We ask thee to have compassion for us, protect us, and keep us safe. Help us to figure out what's happening with Laurel's parents..." A few seconds later, we said amen, and crawled into bed.
I could hear thunder kind of far away, and out of the window, there was a flicker of lightning. Laurel -who was on the other side of the bed- gasped. Are 7 year old's still afraid of lightning? Must be because the next time thunder shook, Laurel ducked under the blanket.
"Does the lightning scare you?" I asked, dodging under as well. She nodded, and I held my arms out to her. I quickly pulled the blanket off from on top of us because I'm extremely claustrophobic.
I held Laurel close to me that night, making sure she wasn't scared.
