Request: Ex Lover

Start from the beginning

"Yeah, The Cure is on tour and I can't wait to see them.", quipped Amy.

Avery shook her head, "You guys have fun. I'm going to sit that one out.", she replied.

"Why?", asked Andy.

"Oh, if only you knew. You'd get why.", thought Avery.

Avery shrugged, "I just don't feel like it. I just want to have a proper vacation.", she replied.

"Proper vacation.  But don't you usually do fun stuff like...going to concerts.", asked Amy.

"I'd rather stay home, eat my weight in snacks, watch the telly, and sleep. That's a better idea  ", Avery said before walking off to her room.

She shut her bedroom door shut behind her and went to her dresser. She knelt down to open the lower drawer where she stowed away more personal items such as her journals and scrapbooks. Inside, there was a little white box with a kiss mark in red lipstick printed on the top. Within the box, there was a stack of Poloroid pictures and little notes. Avery opened the box and poured out its contents on the floor next to her.

The first picture she picked up was a high school photograph of her. It felt so long ago but it wasn't in reality.  She set that photo aside and her heart sank when she picked up the next one, a picture of two hands holding each other.

"What's with you and that bloody camera?"

"Come on, just one more.", insisted Avery.

Her boyfriend rolled his eyes and went along with his girlfriend's request.  He linked his hand with Avery's hand. With her free hand, she snapped a photo of their hands locked together.

"There. Now I have it.", smiled Avery.

"I have ugly hands", said her boyfriend.

"You do not, Robbie."

"Do too."

"Who cares? I love your hands and I could hold them and never let go. That's all that matters."

Avery sheepishly smiled and silently asked herself what was with her obsession with holding hands. Back then, it felt like a symbol of their bond. Now it felt meaningless. She set that picture aside and picked up another picture of shoes. Back then and still currently, she wore black leather combat boots.  In the picture, one of her boots was placed on the landing of a staircase. Beside it was a worn out, white high top sneaker. She gave this picture a funny look. She couldn't remember why she took a picture of her and her ex-boyfriend's shoes put together or what it symbolized. Her neat and polished boots contrasted with his worn out and weathered shoes.

The next photograph was of her and her ex-boyfriend sitting on the same staircase. His arm was around her and he made dead eye contact with the camera. He never used to smile in pictures. Avery was looking off to the side where in the corner, a glimpse of a cat's tail can be seen. It was the tail of her old cat Timmy who always photobombed pictures when he had the chance. Avery couldn't remember who had taken that picture though. It could have been her sister.

Many of those pictures were of her and him or pictures of just her or him taken by each other.  Some were "symbols" like the two of them connecting their hands to make a heart. Some were silly like a picture of her with Timmy resting on the top of her head or of her past lover wearing a pink nightgown. In some pictures, he was looking  at her as she took the photo. Those were to only instances where he didn't make dead eye contact with the camera.
