Jaemin took the children outside after he put his files in his bag and took out some chalk. They walked up to the sidewalk and the kids looked at Jaemin in perplexity.
"Have you guys ever played with chalk before?" Jaemin asked them with a smile and the boys shook their heads.
"Mommy says no," Junkyu answered for him and his little brother. Jaemin nodded his head and handed the both of them a stick of chalk.
The two gazed at the chalk before looking back at Jaemin again.
"Dirty," Doyoung rubbed his palms.
"Yeah, it's a bit messy, but that's what soap and water is for, right?" Jaemin giggled to bring up the mood and the two nodded slowly.
"Come on, I'll draw with you guys! How does that sound?!" Jaemin asked enthusiastically.
"Okay," both boys answer simultaneously.
After playing with the chalk for a few minutes, which the boys had a fun time and Jaemin could tell they've never done anything like this before, Jaemin decided to start prying for answers about their family.
"Having fun?" Jaemin asked kindly and the two nodded with a smile.
"I'm glad. You guys must love doing this with your parents, right?" Jaemin started and Junkyu bit his lip as Doyoung stared at his brother, fear waving over their eyes once again.
"They don't play with us. Daddy is working and mommy.." Junkyu trailed off and started drawing on the ground again.
"What does your mommy do? She stays home with you guys right?" Jaemin questioned.
"Yeah, mommy bad though," Doyoung responded instead. "Mommy daddy not together no more."
Jaemin nodded his head, "I see. And now you two have to live with one of them?"
Both boys nodded and Junkyu bit his lip once again, any harder and blood might drip down.
"Mommy said choose her or else," the oldest of the two boys said.
"Or else what?"
Junkyu shrugged his shoulders and Jaemin could tell this was a sensitive topic to chose on, but he needs to get the information he needs from them in order to make sure they're safe.
"Who do you want to live with?" Jaemin asked, sitting criss cross on the concrete.
"Daddy," both answered quickly and at the same time. Jaemin was taken by surprise with their quick response, but was able to process their words just as quick.
Jaemin smiled, "What does your daddy do with you two?" And with that question, both the boy's eyes lit up. They started answering with a bunch of different things their father has done with them and how they see him every other weekend.
"And your mommy?" Jaemin asked and their mood shifted from happy and excited to scared and dull. He could tell which is the better parent for them to stay with already.
The mother doesn't seem like the best fit since, from what the kids have told him, she would hit them and do drugs. Jaemin was yet again shocked by how they knew what drugs were, but then again their mother is doing it in their face.
No wonder why they're so mature for their age. They've seen what a lot of other children haven't when they're that age.
Jaemin wrapped up their session and took the two boys inside to wash their hands. Their mother was no where to be found. Junkyu tugged Jaemin's arm while holding Doyoung's hand.
"I don't want to stay here," Junkyu whimpered with tears evident in his eyes. Jaemin crouched down on his knees to their height.
"Don't worry you're leaving today. Your daddy will be picking you up, I promise," Jaemin had told them and it was true. He dialed the police and their father.
Jaemin stayed with the children since it seemed their mother left the house without him noticing. But all wonders of where she went was solved as she stumbled through the door with a bottle of alcohol in her hands.
Junkyu and Doyoung clutched Jaemin's hand tight and hid behind the taller.
"What are you d-doing with my kids~" the mother of the children slurred, obviously drunk.
"It's me, Jaemin, Ms. Kim. I'm from the youth care facility," Jaemin answered her calmly, even though he didn't have to.
And right on time, the police had came and hand cuffed her. The children's eyes were spilling tears. It's such a terrible thing for little kids to experience at a young age, or even experience in general.
Their mother was taken and the two were crying as they hugged the taller, Junkyu mumbling 'thank yous' in between his sobs.
"No need to thank me at all. I'm just doing what I have to," Jaemin rubbed their backs and soon a man ran inside the house.
"Junkyu! Doyoung!" The man shouted and the two boys removed themselves from Jaemin's grasp and ran to their father, who enveloped them into a hug.
"Let's go home," their father whispered to them as he held his tears back. He took them to the car and buckled their seatbelts. The father approached Jaemin and pulled him into a hug.
"Thank you. Thank you so much!" The man cried and Jaemin only smiled and pat the man's back.
"Don't thank me. Take care of yourselves now, okay?" They pulled apart and the man nodded while wiping his tears and making his way into his car.
This is what Jaemin loves about his job. The ending, the happily ever after he is able to help progress. It hurts to see such young children or really anyone going through this and being able to help them makes Jaemin feel proud of himself and happy that he can do a great deed for others.
He could only imagine what it must be like for the children that go through such a thing....or can he?
Can he really only imagine what it's like or can he really understand what it's like?
