That was a lie. Marley hated Mr Lahey's guts and would often glare him down. She knew what he did to Isaac. But Isaac had made her promise not to tell anyone, which only made Marley hate him even more.
"We should go," Isaac said, ushering Marley away from his dad. He was never scared his father would hurt Marley, but her just being around him scared him shitless.
Isaac pulled Marley from the cemetery until they were a distance away. They continued waking at a steady pace.
"What was that all about?" Marley asked, looking up at her talk best friend.
"Oh, uh, Lydia Martin. She's gone missing or something," Isaac said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Lydia Martin? As in the girl you asked out last year?" Marley said, twisting her body slightly to look at Isaac."You made me ask her out."
"Correction, encouraged," she said. She smirked slightly, expecting Isaac to join in and smile for once. But when he didn't, Marley expected something was up.
"You okay?"
"Yeah," Isaac said looking up. "Just tired."
When Marley asked if he was alright, it seemed like something in Isaac's brain told him to respond. Like another one of his reflexes. Maybe it was because he didn't want Marley to worry for him, so he had to remember to act okay.
"God yeah, did you get any sleep last night?" She asked, which Isaac responded by shaking his head. Marley took a moment to look at him. She could see that he was tired, but he looked like he was diverting eye contact. Of course, Isaac hated eye contact full stop, but not with Marley. She was the only person that could get a good enough look to see the colour of his eyes. His bright blue eyes.
"Okay, well just take it easy at Lacrosse," Marley frowned. "You can take a nap free period."
No reply.
"I'll even let you use my arm as a pillow, like you used it in Spanish," she said again. To this Isaac smiled slightly, his cheeks cornering and wrinkling slightly.
"Thank you," he mumbled to the ground.
...
"Isaac," Marley hummed. Isaac was slumped over the library table, head in arms. "Isaac."
"Mmh," he murmured. Marley's fingers entangled in his dirty blonde curls as she brushed over them like a new puppy.
"We can go now," she said. "I've finished studying."
She pulled her school books from the table as Isaac slowly pulled himself up from his slumber. After packing her bag, Marley and Isaac walked out of the library and into the fresh air. The sun was setting as they walked side by side. Sunset always reminded Marley of Isaac because of the orange and pink tinges. No one really likes the colour orange at first glance, just like how most people wouldn't wanna be associated with Isaac if they saw him go by. But if you stayed around for long enough, you'd get to see his soft pink sides that overshadowed the toughness of the orange. Marley was the only one who got to see Isaac's pink.
"Can you come over tonight?" Marley asked, walking down the road. "My mum is taking my brother to my grandmas after his second fight this week. He broke some girls nose."
