You shoot the Doctor a quick glance with raised eyebrows, indicating towards the syringe in his hand. No time was wasted in injecting the liquid into Rory, and almost immediately he sprang back into life on the bed.
After a few seconds of laboured deep breaths, as you had observed in drowning victims in old films, Rory sat up fully to see his wife on the floor beside him. His face dropped as he realised she was more concerned with the pile of dust than her newly revived husband.
'So this is what it comes down to, is it?' Rory spat. He was still a little drowsy having just been woken up, but he was clear in his choice of words. 'After all this time, all it took was a pretty boy to split us up.'
'Woah, this is one hell of an overreaction.' you mutter quietly.
'Pretty boy? Rory, he was you!' Amy says, her composure quickly returning. She stands up, and Doctor Stapleton collects the sample in a small jar to be taken away for testing.
'But he wasn't, was he Amy? He wasn't me. Because I was over there on that bed within an inch of my life, and you didn't seem to care at all!'
'Of course I cared. I was jus-'
'Too busy with the better version of me to do anything about it. And you know who it was that saved me in the end? The Doctor! The man who you escaped our wedding with. The man who you continuously flirted with while I was at home ready to marry the love of my life.'
The Doctor stepped forward to reason then, but you threw your arm across his chest, keeping him back. You guided him across to the other side of the room, away from the bickering couple by the bed. He looked visibly distressed at the argument- as if he played some part in this outcome. He reminded you of a child whose parents were going through a divorce, and blaming it on their son. This wasn't his fight to fight, and as much as it hurt you to see him in such a state, you gave him a reassuring glance as you lowered your arm. You nodded your head slowly, and mouthed up to him.
It's not your fault.
You wrapped your arm around his waist and pulled him into you, resting your head lightly on his chest. The Doctor looked down at you hesitantly before coursing his arm around to gently rest on your shoulder.
The situation was unfamiliar. This was the first time you'd seen Rory confront Amy on anything like this, and you could tell how passionately he was speaking from the vein on his forehead that threatened to burst as he continued to shout. His face was almost red with rage, but he wasn't crying. Normally by this point in an argument he was crying. This was bigger than you thought. Rory began to stand, wobbling slightly as he did so. You stepped forward, not knowing whether it would be to usher him back to bed or to help him stand. He throws his hand up towards you, and you step back into the Doctor's embrace. Rory stands confidently, and turns back to his wife.
Amy was crying. A small tear fell down her cheek as her husband shouted. She was fixed to one point on the floor as Rory paced the room waving his arms emphatically when he deemed necessary. He continued to yell into the room about how much he loved her. How much it broke him to hear her preferring the 'better' version of him over what she had grown up with. Amy said that it's just superficial, and that she didn't love him, reasoning that they had only known each other for an hour, but Rory was having none of it.
'So you didn't love him? Does that mean you don't love me either?'
'Of course not. Rory, you're making this something so much bigger than it needs to be.'
'Am I? Am I, Amy? I think this is perfectly justified! After all you've done, flirting with other men and I kept quiet. I think this is perfectly justified!'
'I never flirted with intent on pursuing them, Rory!' Amy says, raising her voice a little as she begins to feel increasingly more angry. Her tone had been one of despair up until this point, but now she was angry. 'I love you! You know I do!'
'I don't think I do anymore.' Rory sighs. 'I thought I did. But now I think this might all have been a lie.'
'Oh, Rory, stop it. This is ridiculous- you know I love you! Would I have gone through the effort of marrying you if I didn't?'
'So marrying me was an effort for you? Because you had to try so hard to keep your hands off the Raggedy Man just long enough for you to say 'I do'? Forget it.'
Amy opens her mouth to argue, but Rory continues.
'No! I don't want to hear your excuses, Amy. I don't want to hear your pathetic attempts at reconciliation because this has gone too far now. All this time, I kept quiet. All this time, yet you still don't appreciate me for it, do you?'
'Rory I-'
'Stop interrupting me! Do you have any idea what it's like to see you with somebody else? Do you have any idea how much it breaks me? You're the only person I've ever loved, Amy. Ever. And this is how you reciprocate that?'
'Rory stop it!'
'Why should I? Why should I stop it, hmm? So you can go off and find someone better? I thought our marriage meant more to you than that but fine. I'm sure there's a whole host of people waiting for you back home, isn't there‽ Or should I stop becaus-'
'Because I'm pregnant, Rory. That's why you should stop it.'
