"So nearly breaking my ribs was appropriate for this situation?"
He closed his eyes at my sardonic question, the deep crease settling between his eyebrows once again. "Oi, don't be so dramatic, I was far from breaking your—"
His eyes fluttered open, voice stopping when he saw I lifted my shirt, exposing my purpled ribcage. His focus stayed on my side for a moment before bringing his emotionless gaze to my unblinking eyes.
His voice didn't waver in the slightest. "I could've done a lot worse."
I let out a bitter laugh, squinting my eyes at him slightly, "I assume that's the closest I'll be getting for an apology?"
I watched his eyebrow raise at my unusual impudence before I turned my back to go over to the medical supplies, bringing them back over to my bed.
"Let me be, I have to tend to this now." I said without meeting his eyes.
There was no signal that he had left, but I continued on anyway. Carefully unraveling a roll of gauze and readying some cotton pads.
I couldn't place a finger on it, but something felt different. I wasn't usually this disrespectful. Especially to my superiors, and especially to Levi. I had no idea where my courtesy had gone. Maybe it was because Levi was standing in my room for no apparent reason, maybe it was because I still had to nurse my wounds, or maybe it was just because I was exhausted. From a member of the Special Operations Squad, these reasons are childish, I know.
I sat there holding a dampened cloth in my hand, knowing that even the slightest twist of my spine would incite a flare of pain up my side. So I sat, not knowing where to even begin. I turned to reach around my back, pondering over how to do this with the least induced pain. My ears were quick to perk up to the audible scoff over by my door.
"Have you never dealt with injuries before?"
I closed my eyes, preparing to spit more venom over in his direction, that was until I heard shuffling throughout my room and a soft clunk in front of me. I opened my amber orbs only to find myself staring back at a pair of gray ones; he was sitting in my desk chair right before me, one leg crossed over the other. He held a hand out, beckoning for the cloth I was currently holding in my own. I sat there completely stupefied before delicately placing it into the palm of his hand.
"Ribs first." he said to me as I lifted the hem of my shirt with my right hand, this time with more hesitation.
He then uncrossed his legs, both feet now on the floor as he scooted his chair closer to where I was sitting on the edge of my bed. He reached for a small bottle in the medical supplies, shaking the glass vile in his hand before unscrewing the cap. My nose scrunched at the potent scent as I watched him pour a few droplets of green liquid onto the cloth. He neared my side, placing the white cotton gently against my ribcage. I flinched when he first made contact with my skin, the medicine bringing a sudden scorching sensation when meeting the bruises.
My free hand went straight to clutch the pain. Taking a quick glance down to my side, I noticed my hand enveloped over a rather cold one. I stared for a moment, noticing how small mine was compared to it, my palm not even covering the entirety of the one underneath. I focused back up to the pair of eyes in front of me, almost forgetting whose hand it had belonged to.
Levi simply stared back at me when I realized my hand was on top of his. He didn't voice that he minded, his gaze just stayed fixed on mine before trailing over the rest of my face to the other wounds in need of cleaning.
Despite the situation, I felt a strange sense of comfort wash over me as I studied Levi's face.
Was he really helping me with the injuries he created?
