"So what are you? Some kind of witch?" Isaac asked as he leant forward on the table. Deaton looked at him plainly.

"No, I'm a veterinarian," he said calmly. Marley had only had a brief encounter with Deaton, but could immediately tell he needed a well earned raise. "Unfortunately, I don't see anything here that's going to be an effective defense against a paralytic toxin."

"We're open to any suggestions," Derek said.

"What about an affective offence?" Marley suggested.

"We already tried. I nearly took its head off. And Argent emptied an entire clip into it. The thing just gets back up," Derek said, shooting down Marley's idea. Sometimes she thought it best to sit back and agree/disagree quietly.

"Has it shown any weaknesses?" Deaton asked.

"Yeah, it can't swim," Marley said, remembering the night that it kept Stiles and Derek in the pool. Isaac was impressed that she was so dedicated to helping Scott.

"Does that go for Jackson as well?"

"No. He's the captain of the swim team," Scott said, glancing at Marley.

"Essentially, you're trying to catch two people. A puppet...and a puppeteer," Deaton explained, holding up a metal symbol. "One killed the husband, but the other had to take care of the wife. Do we know why?"

"I don't think Jackson could do it. His mother died pregnant too, and she was maybe murdered. I think he couldn't let the same thing happen to someone else," Scott said. Marley nodded in agreement.

"How do you know it's not part of the rules? The kanima kills murderers. If Jackson kills the wife, then the baby dies too," Isaac asked. Marley always knew he had a smart head, he just never used it.

"Does that mean your fathers a murderer?"

"Wouldn't surprise me," Isaac said. Marley felt her heart break at this. No child should have to feel that way about their parent. Mr Lahey did this to him, and if Marley was being honest, she was glad he was six feet under.

"Hold on. The book says they're bonded, right? What if the fear of water isn't coming from Jackson, but from the person controlling him?" Deaton laid a circle of mountain ash around the symbol. "What if something that affects the kanima also affects its master?"

"Meaning what?" Isaac asked.

"Meaning we catch them. Both of them."

...

"Marley. Marley!"

The girl was walking up the steps of school when she turned, hearing her name being called. Isaac stood at the bottom, stopping at the first step. He didn't want to get to close; scaring her was the last thing he wanted to do.

"Isaac," Marley said, looking around. He slowly walked up a few steps so that there was a smaller gap between them, now at eye level.

"How- how are you?" He asked.

"I'm alright, thanks. You?" They were excruciatingly awkward. Even more than what they were before all of the werewolf business.
