Somebody to Love

“Alright, Mr. and Mrs. Hiddleston,” Dr. Green smiles. “Are you ready?”

Tom grabs Bethany’s hand and holds it tight, not even that realizing that he’s hurting her. Today was the day that they found out if the baby was a boy or a girl… and they were nervous. Secretly, Tom was hoping for a little boy. He loved his daughters more than anything in this world and agreed whenever someone called him a girl dad, but he wanted to see what it was like to raise a boy and have a son that he could shape into a kind, caring, man.

Tom always wanted 2 girls and a boy, and this was the time to see if it came true. Of course, the sex of the baby didn’t matter to him, as long as they were healthy, but he did really want a boy.

Bethany didn’t care either way… she was terrified. How was she going to take care of a baby? She had babysat her brother’s children a million times so it’s not like she didn’t know how, she was just nervous. Despite being terrified, she was so excited to meet her little boy or girl and already loved them with everything she had in her.

Dr. Green rubs the gel on Bethany’s growing stomach and runs the machine over it. “Alright, so… this is your baby. Everything looks okay and there are no issues that we found from the blood test. It looks like your baby is perfectly healthy and good news, you’re officially out of the usual miscarriage range and it is very unlikely that there will be a problem at this point in development. So far so good.”

“And um, the gender?” Tom asks, squeezing onto Bethany’s purple hand.

“Baby?” she whispers and looks down at her hand.

“Oh! I’m so sorry, my love. I didn’t even realize.”

“It’s okay, are you ready?”

“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Hiddleston, you have a healthy baby boy.”

“Oh my God!” Tom screams in excitement.

Bethany laughs and holds her husband. “We’re having a boy.”

“We’re having a boy,” he whispers, tears filling his eyes. “Oh, we have to tell the girls when we get home. Bella will be so excited.”

“Arielle might not be too happy…” Bethany chuckles.

“What does it matter, he’s healthy! He’s healthy and you’re not having any complications and everything is okay. I’ll order the little dinosaur. Oh! What if I order it now for same-day shipping and that’s how we’ll tell them? I’ll do that right now, that’s what we’ll do.”

“Calm down, honey, I can see your heart beating through your chest. I’m really excited too.”

“It’s fine, Beth. I exercise, my heart is in tip-top shape. Holy crap, it’s a boy. This is everything I’ve wanted, Bethany. I have two beautiful little girls at home and now I’m having a boy. What if he looks like me? Do you think he’ll look like me? I hope he has my eyes, I really want him to have my eyes. He needs little curls too. Oh, Bethany, please, give him my curls. Arielle and Arabella have their mum’s beautiful curls, and I want him to have my hair. All of my children have curly hair so he can't he any different.”

“You know that I can’t really control that, right?”

“Well, yes… I do suppose that’s right. I’m sorry for getting so worked up about this, I’m just very excited.”

Dr. Green chuckles and finishes signing the paperwork. “Here you go, Beth. You’re clear to do light exercise like walking, yoga, grocery shopping, but just don’t overdo it, okay? You and the baby are healthy and I want to keep it that way.”
