He would play with her in the field of the summer plantation almost every day to keep her away from her very busy parents. To keep her mind away from the other children who worked around the chickens and goats. Her father wouldn't be caught dead with her near such people of low class. Daphne found it rather odd but didn't dare question anything.
Good times that always were unless she actually snuck around to the back of the glorious home to play with them after all the warnings she received.
Every summer they always try their best to help make the people who work the fields comfortable with the heat. She'd help give out water and bread sometimes. It felt good to know she made them feel better. Daphne wouldn't understand the ways of the white men until she was older. She'd grow to hate people who kept others in their pockets.
"What is the meaning of this surprise visit Fredrick?" The door was left cracked open just enough for her to peer out to glimpse the messenger's sweaty face. His pale blue shirt was drenched. The light brown hair was even sticking to his forehead.
"It's Matthias, sir!" The winded man gasped, even cowering slightly.
Daphne recognized the name at once. Her mother and father talked about a man with the same name at dinner one time. She never forgets each time her mother frowned. And that very name utterly destroyed her mother's once happy expression.
"I'm not sure how he knew where Miss Hastings was, but he went to the south side plantation." That's when Papa's expression changed from worried to deathly afraid.
Daphne didn't know know why her mother was involved or where all that blood came from. She only listened more closely.
"The neighboring plantation owner overheard shouts and pleading cries as he let his dogs out for a feed. It was the most horrible thing he had ever seen." Fredrick paled again. His knees buckled from underneath him.
"What happened to my wife?" Papa's voice was full of dread.
Daphne felt her stomach sink low. Tears of fright started to trickle down her lightly freckled face. Fear bubbled within her quickly.
She covered her mouth to prevent noise from escaping those rosy lips.
"When I got there Miss Hastings had already lost so much blood, I...I couldn't stop the flow in time before-" The man couldn't even finish what he was saying before breaking down in a hysterical cry.
"Matthias was hurt badly from the fight Miss Hastings gave him before she....she went down, I found him sitting in a corner with a puddle of his own steaming juices." Fredrick cried.
"He...he told me to tell you that he has placed a curse on your lands, all for the sudden dreadful death of his wife, and a curse has been set upon your child!" He cried out and fell to the front steps.
The little girl was hearing things but nothing was being registered. What did the man's dead wife have to do with her dying mother? What curse is this?
"My wife is dead?" Daphne's father's voice broke as he started to choke. That is when it hit the girl.
Her mother was dead and would not be coming back home for morning tea. Shock ripped through her body. The tears had stopped falling as terror filled her frail tiny bones.
"And...and what of this curse of little Daphne?" Her father reached out to help Fredrick up off the steps. It seems that his crop means nothing now. No thought going towards the lands that will soon perish.
"He laughed when I asked him about it."
She didn't even realize that her father had opened the door and bent down to her level. He must have turned briefly and spotted her standing in the middle of the greeting hall.
She could see him in front trying to shake her awake but nothing worked. Her throat was closed too tight to speak, she didn't have the courage to say anything.
Her favorite person in the world was gone and there is no way to get her back. Her mother was gone forever before she could have even said goodbye. Daphne couldn't seem to will her speech into action. Nothing in the world could convince her to utter a single word.
Life will never be the same again and she wasn't sure she was going to survive this evolving world.
