Ruby's Surveyor

Chapter 10: New Start Pt. 1

"Oh yeah? What if I called you crater face?" The boy now named Jaune said, defending himself.

"Hey, that explosion was her fault!"

"Well, the names Jaune Arc! Short, sweet, rolls off the tongue - ladies love it!"

"...Do they?" Ruby had to ask a little skeptical of Jaune's words.

"They will! Well, I-I hope they will. My mom always says that... Never mind." Ruby couldn't help but giggle at Jaune which an awkward silence befell the two.

Before Ruby could say anything, Jaune noticed something about the young red-hooded girl. "So...what's with the goggles?"

"Huh? These?" What many didn't know that recently Ruby had been getting self-conscious about the goggles she wore everywhere.

Whether it was the comments from other kids making fun of her about it, or the fact that it made her stand out more, she was having second thoughts about having it on.

"Why...what's wrong with them?" Ruby couldn't help but ask. "Well...they look pretty cool so what do they do?"

"Huh?" Ruby...was caught off guard in that moment, throughout the years a lot of people would either make fun of her or stare at her like she was weird when it concerned her goggles.

If fact there were a couple times she caught her sister and dad look at them funny, but...like her cape it meant a lot to her...especially since it helped with the making of Surveyor.

"Yeah, it's like from them Spruce Willis movies, very sleek, awesome looking, I just think it's really cool!" Jaune said with a big smile.

Ruby not knowing what to do, looks away with said goggles over her eyes, all the while blushing. "You...you really think so?" "Yeah! Definitely!"

Now feeling pretty happy, Ruby decided to keep the conversation going with a topic of her own, one she knows she excels at.

"Um...So...I-I got this thing!" Pulling out Crescent Rose in its weapon form she stabs it into the ground.

"Whoa! Is that a Scythe?" Jaune asks a little shaken.

"It's also a customizable, high impact sniper rifle."

"A...What?"

Cocking the gun Ruby explains that-
"It's also a gun."

"Oh. That's cool!" Ruby smiled while putting on her goggles. "So what've you got?" The red hooded girl said while scanning his person.

"Oh, uh...I've got this sword." Jaune reply's unsheathing the blade of his weapon.

"Oooooh!" "Yeah, and I got this Shield too!" Grabbing his weapons scabbard, Jaune raises his arm and expands the metal into a shield.

Seeing the results of the scan, Ruby was a little disappointed. "So a collapsible Shield that turns into a scabbard huh?"

"Y-yes that's right...h-how?"

"It's these goggles of mine, I recently customized them to scan anything technical, either it being springs, latches, buttons, and or dust." Ruby said proudly of her own semi-creation.

"So it can scan everything?"

"Well...not everything per say...but I mainly know what type of Weapon something is because...well I'm kind of a dork when it comes to weapons.
It's just these goggles here that help me if I'm right or not." Ruby explained.

"I mean...just look at Crescent Rose here, I kinda went overboard when designing it."

"Wait...You made that?!"

"Of course, all students at signal forge their own weapons. Didn't you make yours?"

"It's a hand-me-down. My great-great-grandfather used it to fight in the war." A little down about having Just a sword.

"Sounds more like a family heirloom to me!Well, I like it! Not many people have an appreciation for the classics these days."

"Yeah, the classics..." Jaune says, a little elated by Ruby's comment.

As the two continued walking Ruby was wondering about something and asked a question. "So why'd you help me out back there? In the courtyard?"

"Eh, why not? My mom always says, 'Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet.'"

Ruby smiled. "Hmm.", happy knowing that maybe having friends isn't so bad, but she suddenly realized something when looking around. "Hey, where are we going?"

"Oh, I don't know! I was following you." The two stopped.

"Y-You think there might be a directory? Maybe a food court? Some sort of recognizable landmark? Is, uh... Is that a 'no'?"

Ruby was now laughing about Jaune's sense of direction. "Yeah. That's a 'no'."
