"Really?" Liam asked. "You'd do that."

"Of course."

"Thank you."

...

Marley sat at her desk again after her talk with Liam. Her hand held her head as her eyes fluttered shut every once in a while. The time had to be at least eleven o'clock and she'd been working for two hours. She had a whole essay due the next day that she hadn't had time to write in the week. More appropriately, she forgot. Marley's hand went numb as her hand writing worsened with each word. Her eyes closed for a second, but they refused to open. Her hand still moved though she couldn't feel it. The reflexes in her mind made her jerk awake just before her head fell out of her hands.

After realising that she had almost fallen asleep, Marley dropped her pen and leant back. She stretched in her chair and sighed deeply. She rubbed her eyes and looked down at her work. Frowning, she read the words that had been written in her own hand. Her eyes blinked, unsure of what she wrote. She read it again. Then again.

When is a door not a door?

...

"Okay, so what happens to a person who has a near-death experience and comes out of it seeing things?" Scott asked as they all sat around the outside bench. Marley sat next to Isaac and Allison, taking bites from her apple.

"And is unable to tell what's real or not?" Stiles added.

"And is being haunted by demonic visions of dead relatives?" Allison also added.

"They're all locked up because they're insane," Isaac said.

"Ha. Can you at least try and be helpful, please?" Stiles asked, keeping up his daily dose of arguing with Isaac.

"For half my childhood, I was locked in an freezer. So being helpful is kind of a new thing for me," Isaac said.

"We still milking that?"

"Yeah, maybe I am still milking that," Isaac argued with Stiles. Marley sighed and rolled her eyes, not noticing a dark haired girl walk up to them.

"Hi. Hi, sorry. I couldn't help overhearing what you guys were talking about. And I think I actually might know what you're talking about," she said sweetly, Marley thought she recognised her. "There's a Tibetan word for it. It's called "Bardo." It literally means 'in-between state.' The state between life and death."

"And what do they call you?" Lydia asked.

"Kira," Scott said. "She's in our history class."

"Do you mean Bardo in Tibetan Buddhism or Indian?" Marley asked after she thought to herself. She had heard the word Bardo in two different books she had read but didn't know which one Kira was using.

"Either, I guess," Kira replied, sitting next to Stiles. "But all the stuff you guys were just saying? All that happens in Bardo. There are different progressive states where you can have hallucinations. Some you see, some you just hear. And you can by visited by peaceful and wrathful deities."

"Wrathful deities? What are those?" Isaac asked.

"What do you think, Isaac?" Marley asked. "Wrathful, deities."

"Like demons," Kira said.

"Demons, why not?" Stiles said, mentally noting another supernatural creature down, Marley actual noting it down in her notebook, sure to research when she got home.

"Hold on, if there are different progressive states, then what's the last one?" Allison asked.

"Death," Kira said, a little too sweetly. "You die."

...

"It sounds like your subconscious is trying to communicate with you," Deaton said as Marley, Scott and Stiles walked into the back room. Marley only followed them because she had to pick up her grandma's cats medication. But helping a little in the way wouldn't hurt her.

"Well, how do I tell my subconscious to use a language that I actually know?" Stiles asked.

"Do you remember what the sign language was?" Marley asked. "How it looked?"

"You know sign language?" Scott asked, a little surprised.

"My uncle is autistic and can't speak. Me and my brother use sign language around him," Marley replied.

"Okay, the first one was this," Stiles said, holding his finger up and using his other to circle around it.

"That's 'when'," Marley said.

"Then there was this twice," Stiles said, putting his hands side by side and pulling one back.

"That's 'door'."

"And this is in between," Stiles said, flicking thumb under his chin. Marley's heart fell and she felt sick. It couldn't be a coincidence.

"That's it?" Marley said, Stiles nodding. "'When is a door not a door?'"

"When is a door not a door?" Stiles asked in an unsure manner. Marley stepped back and looked down, processing everything.

"When it's ajar," Scott said.

"You're kidding me. A riddle? My subconscious wants to tell me a riddle?"

Marley blanked out for the rest of the conversation. It was like her mind was racing and was unable to process what everyone was saying. She could hear people talking, but she couldn't understand any of it. She had written those exact words. 'When is a door not a door?' Maybe she was just tired. Maybe she had just heard it or seen it in something read. She hoped it was that anyway.

"Marley?" Stiles asked. "You okay?"

"Yeah- yeah I'm fine."
