Chapter 47

The closer you got to the huge room, the louder the chatter became. There must be many people inside. You entered the open door and scanned the room with your eyes. There were many detectives and police officers, probably going through the case and organizing the papers. Then you noticed the detectives of the task force standing close together discussing something. You began to walk towards them hoping for some enlightenment They were chatting in a quiet tone, perhaps about something they didn't want the other police officers around them to hear. Aizawa was the first one to notice you approaching them. You saw his lips move as he kept staring at you and a moment later the other detectives turned to you as well. You looked at them all one by one as you approached them. The chief Soichiro Yagami wasn't among them, nor was L.

"Hello." You greeted them shortly and waited for a response. You didn't know how to approach this situation or what you could say.

"Hello." Mogi greeted back and there was an awkward silence in the air.

"I'm not sure what is going on here or why I'm out of my cell, but I haven't killed Light Yagami. It's not wh-" You panicked and continued to speak faster, desperate for them to listen to you or tell you that you were let out because they knew you were innocent.

"Hey, (Your real name). Calm down. We know." Matsuda grabbed you by your shoulders and tried to calm you down, but he only confused you. "How-" "Oh, L told us your real name" Aizawa clarified.

"We are so sorry and apologize deeply for what we have put you through." Matsuda bowed, followed by Mogi. "We were misled and all the evidence in front of us was pointing at your guiltiness." Mogi added. "It's okay." You said knowing that they were fooled by Light and were truly sorry.

"L came by to the HQ out of nowhere with evidence that Light was Kira. He couldn't explain it to us right away, but we trusted him. I mean, he was back from the dead! The first thing he told us was to let you and Aizawa out. He came personally to do that. He also mentioned something about a trap and the SPK, but I didn't fully understand that part." Matsuda confessed.

"Oh, I see... Where is L now?" you wondered but no one knew. You needed to talk to him. See him and know that he was indeed back.

You pointed your finger lightly around the room as you asked. "So, what is going on here?" You knew what you were expecting to hear, but you wanted to hear it from them.

"The police officers are gathering all the necessary evidence and files of the Kira case." Mogi shortly replied. "The case is over- almost. We are waiting for some key evidence, but it's mostly over." He explained and you guessed that the key evidence was the recorded confession of Light Yagami.

You walked around the room while your mind was gone thinking about why L was back.

A Shinigami was supposed to die if he tried to save the life of a human, that was how the Shinigami died, that killed L to save Misa, but then again, L was not a Shinigami. Only half-shinigami.

He also mentioned something about being put on trial time and depending on how he acted, his fate would be decided. If he chose to use his death note and kill humans to increase his life span, he would be reborn as a full Shinigami and lose all memories, that he had as a human or half-human.

If a half-shinigami, however, would kill no one, his lifespan would run out and he would die, just like a normal shinigami. You remembered what you read in that ancient book. That half-shinigami, never came back, though, which suggests, that he either turned back into a human after his death but lost all his memories of the time as a half-shinigami, or he was indeed dead, which means, that not using the death note during the trial time was not enough to turn back into a human.
