?Chapter 31: Wither and Decay?

Start from the beginning

"Uh, yeah-" He cleared his throat awkwardly.

You stood up and walked over to the chart on the wall, "So that's what this is? It's a translation key?" You asked, placing your hand next to the key. Varian nodded. You sent him a smile, "Wow, Varian you are so smart. To be able to translate this without any help? That's crazy!"

"Oh, heh. It's nothing." He waved off the compliments, his face slightly red, "Ehem, yeah actually I just translated this part, I think it's the incantation that Rapunzel used to save my dad." He stood up from the table holding the paper and pressed it to the wall, pinning it in place next to the translation key. He then stepped back to his desk, he stood one gloved hand on the table looking down at the papers scattered across his desk.

You looked at the paper that they had just pinned up on the wall, it sure was the incantation that Rapunzel used the other day, "Wither..." You read, it was a habit of yours to read things out loud.

Varian's eyes widened, he spun around quickly, "Wait! No!"

"and Decay." Your eyes widened too, you couldn't stop. The incantation continued falling from your mouth. Your eyes grew black and your hair floated in the air. Black streams of light filled the room, "End this destiny,

break these earthy chains,

and set the spirit free."

Varian looked around, eagerly looking for something to snap you out of your trance, "(Y/N)!" He reached out towards you, before pulling his hand back. The last time he tried this his gloves burned off, "Come on. Please (Y/N)."

"Take was has been hurt.

Grant them no mercy.

Bend and break the reigns-"

Varian shook his head before grabbing your face lightly, his gloves burning off in the process. The pain in his hands was unbearable but he endured, "(Y/N)! PLEASE! I need you!" He yelled, the room crumbling around the two of you.

You could hear him...

But you couldn't do anything about it.

You felt trapped in your own body, unable to stop the incantation.

You yelled at yourself mentally, "LET GO!" You cried, seeing how much pain Varian was in, "LET ME GO!"

You suddenly snapped out of it, falling to the ground. Varian sat down next to you, pulling you into a tight embrace. You pressed yourself against him, feeling tears falling from your eyes. Gripping onto the material of his shirt, you cried into his chest.

"I'm sorry." You cried, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry." You repeated over and over again. He wrapped his arms around you, holding you as if you could disappear at any moment.

He shook his head, "You're alright. It's okay." He clutched onto you, ignoring the pain in his hands. He felt tears fill his eyes, he tried to blink them away, the pain didn't matter as much as you did right now. But he was unsuccessful, tears fell from his eyes, he wasn't sure if they were tears of relief or pain, "You're fine, (Y/N). You're okay, I'm okay. Everyone is fine." He breathed, his voice low.

The two of you sat against the wall for several minutes, just crying in each other's arms.

Both of you clinging to the other tightly.

After you got a hold of yourself you sat up, "Oh, Varian. Your hands!" You said, looking down at the boy's hand which looked slightly burned, you were surprised that he could endure that much of the incantation. You had almost said the whole thing and he was in contact with you the whole time.

He shook his head, you could tell he was trying to hide the pain, "It's- It's fine." You would have said the healing incantation but you were too weak to use your powers again. You quickly got up stepping over to his desk.

"Clearly you aren't fine. Stay there." You motioned for him to stay in his place, not like there was much he could do without his hands. You looked over at his desk, glanced at the bottles, and spotted one that read "Healing". You grabbed it and walked back over to the boy, kneeling down next to him, "I'm so glad you label these." You carefully took his hand and turned it over, palm up. His usually rough, hands were now seemly rubbed raw from the incantation, "This is probably gonna hurt."

Varian winced, you hadn't even used the solution yet, "Yeah, no kidding... I hope your hands are sanitary." He said, referencing back to the first time you had healed him.

"Joking at a time like this?" You asked before pouring some of the contents onto one of his hands.

He shrugged, wincing in pain again, "What can I say. It's a nervous habi-" You cut him off by pouring some of the solution onto his other hand, "Ow." He sucked in a breath through clenched teeth.

You put the bottle back on the table before sitting down against the wall next to him, waiting for the solution to have full effect. Varian glanced over at you.

"So... come here often?" He joked. You laughed, resting your head against the wall behind you, "This is much more eventful than what my day would have been." He said, lifting up his hands and turning them, seeing progress on how well they healed, "I'm really glad that didn't end too terribly." He had a soft smile on his face.

You nodded, "I'm sorry. I really should have known that I could use the incantation. If it wasn't for you... I probably would have brought this whole place down." You said, wringing your hands together. You really could have killed him. Varian glanced down at your hands, noticing your nervous habit.

He grabbed one of your hands, holding it in front of the both of you, "But you didn't." He said softly, "Everyone is okay. I'm fine. You're fine." You nodded.

"Yeah, but-" You started before being cut off by Varian.

"But nothing. We're okay." He said, looking down at your hands, "That was a pretty smart move there to use my solutions." You looked up at him, a soft smile on your face. Varian was really good at comforting you, "(Y/N)... I-" He paused, thinking for a second about what he was going to say, "I- I'm glad I get to hang out with you."

You smiled, "I'm glad I get to hang out with you too, Varian." You then glanced down at his hands, grabbing one of them and examining it, "Wow. Is this a different solution than the one you used on me?" You asked.

"Oh, heh. Yeah actually." He stood up, holding a hand out to help you up. You accepted his help and walked over to his desk with him, "After the whole saving-Corona-from-fear-inducing-petrification-rocks I kept testing the solution, I finally came up with something I thought would work... and it did." He gestured over to the bottle, "This was actually the first time I tried it."

Your eyes widened, "You didn't even know if that would work?" Your jaw dropped, "What if I had killed you?!"

"Don't worry!" Varian said, "You wouldn't have, I just replicated the other solution and added things to it. I knew it wasn't dangerous... kind of." He shook his head, "Anyways... just in case something happens to the key, as of now I'm the only person who knows how to translate the Demanitus scroll. Do you wanna... learn it?" He shrugged, "You know... just for fun?"

You nodded, "Sure. Then we can write secret notes to each other in the scrolls language?"

"Yes!" Varian said, waving you over, "Okay, okay! This is so awesome!" He pointed to some of the characters and explained what they meant. You nodded, before writing the characters down on paper. So you could remember them. After you memorized the characters you pinned them up on the wall, next to Varian's key. You took notice of how messy and rushed his handwriting was compared to yours. You don't remember where you heard it from but you remember someone saying people with rushed or messy handwriting tend to think faster than others. You nodded, that was definitely true. You smiled to yourself before heading back over to the table, standing next to Varian, your shoulders touching.
