Chapter 21 - I Loved.. Living

Start from the beginning

For a few days, Mark even worried that maybe their relationship was just platonic, nothing more than two very close friends who understood each other like no other. Donghyuck knew just how to get under his skin, and Mark knew how to get under his. But all the while, they knew how to make the other feel better, happier. Mark didn't want to even fathom the thought of it not being romantic, he knew he already loved the human. But Donghyuck never made any moves either. Mark thought it must've been a sign the human wasn't interest in the way he was for him, it had to be right?

He was wrong. Donghyuck turned from the wall, his eyes wide and slightly glazed over with tears, his lips slightly parted. And like a magnet, the human's warm hand quickly found Mark's, shocking the demon as they hadn't been affection like this before. It was a simple hand hold, but it felt like so much more as the butterflies erupted in his stomach.

"Do you mean that?" Donghyuck whispered back, his sun kissed skin shined in the candle light, illuminating him beautifully. He was always beautiful, Mark had already decided that, but at this moment, he couldn't recall a time the human looked just as beautiful.

It was like Donghyuck had sucked all the words out of the demon, his head merely nodding as an answer, too afraid if he tried to speak that he'd embarrass himself. God, did this human make him feel pathetic.

Mark felt tears slowly well up in his own eyes, just the sight of Donghyuck's tears alone making him want to cry as well. And just a moment later, Donghyuck threw his arms around Mark's shoulders hugging him tightly.

Mark didn't waste a second, hugging him back with his arms around his slim waist, holding the human. His face nestled in Donghyuck's neck, the familiar scent filling his senses. It felt like a fairytale, it felt like he was floating. There was something to Donghyuck that was like a drug, he couldn't explain it.

Donghyuck sniffed, trying not to cry into Mark's ear, still shocked at his kind words, but yet he still spoke quietly into his ear, "When?"

"Whoa, whoa! Lovebirds! In front of my portrait? Really?" A familiar voice shocked both of them, they immediately pushed each other away, as if Renjun hadn't already seen them tightly embracing each other. It brought a smile to his face, but at the same time, it worried him.

The last few weeks were surprisingly peaceful, Donghyuck had graduated from high school and both of the boys came often to visit, and better yet, Renjun could see his best friend falling in love and become happier. It was great, and he loved to see the way his friend would smile unlike he did with anyone else.

Still though, the worry never subsided. Renjun couldn't help the fear he felt for the human, fear that he would end his life for Mark, instead of living his precious human life. So badly, Renjun didn't want to see Donghyuck follow the same path. It hurt Renjun to make that terribly difficult decision all that time ago, and to this day, it still tore him to pieces. He didn't want Donghyuck to make that mistake as well.

And now, standing in the hall after seeing his best friend being tightly embraced, and knowing they hadn't shown affection to each other just yet according to the human who gushed on and on about it, it told Renjun everything he needed to know. The peaceful few weeks of the two getting to know each other were long gone. They were falling in love, and quickly. It wasn't cute or beautiful anymore, it scared Renjun.

He tried to joke, to poke fun at the two, and even more so at the way the two acted as if they were caught doing something they shouldn't have.

"Don't look at me like that!" Renjun laughed, trying to play it off as well as he could, but he was hurting inside. And yet, he couldn't do anything about it. It wasn't his decision to make.
