Basketball Season

Start from the beginning

He walked to his position on the court. Staring the boy from the other team, that was across from him, in the eye.

Game on.

20 seconds in Jason scored a three pointer and the crowd went wild.

By the last 20 seconds the other team were up by 2 points. It was close. Too close.

He turned to the benches. Only caring about one persons reaction. She was smiling at him reassuringly. God damn max and her perfect smile.

The whistle sounded and they were playing again, Lucas had the ball. He could have tried a shot but passed to Jason instead. He was a senior he needed this moment. Jason stood by the three point line and time seemed to slow.

"Come on man, come on" he mumbled. He'd been on the court all game, not being subbed out once. He was exhausted but he couldn't care less at this point. All he cared about was Jason making this shot.

Lucas knew it was going in. He smiled widely at him. The ball fell through the hoop just before the buzzer sounded and just like that the game was over.

The team all celebrated, jumping on each other, patting each other on the back and yelling as loud as they could. Jason shot Lucas a smile and nodded in thanks. He just smiled back and turned to see the crowd running onto the court. At the very front,

Max.

She was smiling wider than before as she threw herself at him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and nuzzled into it. He grabbed her by the waist and picked her up, spinning her around as they both laughed.

He noticed his parents beside them, staring expectantly at him. Max understood what was happening when he placed her gently back on the ground. So she took a step back and watched the family talk.

"We're so proud of you." Mrs Sinclair said, hugging her son.

"It took real guts to give up that shot. Why'd you do it?" His dad asked.

"There's a college scout here and Jason, The guy I passed it to, is a senior. Wanted the scout to see him score a last minute three pointer so he'd consider him," he explained, "and it looks like it went as planned." Jason was talking to the man by the side of the court.

"That's really sweet of you," El said, approaching them. She wrapped her arms around him. "Congrats."

"Thanks El."

He realised after he said it that he hadn't called her Jane. Max stepped in, "I have to say Jane, your middle name being Eleanor is great because you get really cool nicknames. My parents didn't have the decency to give me a good one." They all laughed.

"Thanks for saving my ass, Madmax." He whispered to her.

"That's what I'm here for."

"What do you say to food at Benny's?" Dustin suggested.

They all looked to their parents, who all nodded.

"Be back at Mikes by 10:30," Joyce told El and Will.

"Okay mom," Will replied.
