12 - The Best Friend

     'oh is that so? from what I have heard you, yet again, was unsuccessful in catching that notorious robbery gang.' 'this gang is unlike others, they change their tactics, look at the details. The team is doing everything we can'

Mother scoffed 'I let you on that team thinking you had extra motivation to catch this gang, I mean your best friend, but I guess not enough.' 

My grip on my cutlery tightened

   'It's embarrassing really, that they have been able to do 5 robberies without any interference, any lead. Gina ought to be fired'

   'if you know everything so damn well perhaps you should lead' I let out and immediately regretted it.

    'Excuse me? You do not talk to me in that tone. Do you want me to take you off that task force? because I am very close to doing so if you behave like such a brat. And do remember that I put you there, and I concealed you had a personal relation to this case.'

She was right, that's why I was still going to these stupid dinners, and it was the reason why I was taking all her shit. My goal was catching this gang and she had the power to take me out of the task force making it almost impossible to reach that goal.

    'yes ma'am.I apologize' I let out. 

The waiter finally arrived with our food. and again in silence we started eating.

    'How is it to have the new partner?' mother inquired

     'It is fine, it took some adjustments but he is an adequate officer.'

    'Yes, I hear he has been doing well in the cyber robbery department?'

It was true, Jungkook in the limited time he had been in the taskforce has already made quite an impression on the higher staff, due to his numerous successes in battling cyber attacks.

    'yes he has.'

An image of Jungkook appeared in my mind, how he was so focus on his computer, as if he was in a different world. And when you ask him to join lunch he would have a little jump, every single time. And then he smiled and happily agreed. It was strange but thinking about him like that brought some comfort right now. 

     'Pretty impressive for a new guy.'

She said it in an impressed but also surprised tone. To me it wasn't a surprise at all. Others picked on Jungkook because he was so smart and foremost because he was good with computers.

It makes sense with all these technology advancements that cyber criminality is a top priority of the police and attracting people with the right skills was a difficult task.

I silently nodded.

     'and what about your old partner? He got promoted right? Park Jimin?' 

My heart dropped hearing his name.

Did she really need to bring him up?

     'yes he did.'

      'I remember his impressive skills on the shooting range. Perhaps you should ask him for some lessons. so that you can finally be top of your team.' she didn't say it in a disappointed voice but really as if she wanted to help me with this advice. It kind of freaked me out.

oh the irony though

Remembering Jimin's shooting lesson, his body connected with mine. his hand on my waist and the other trailing my arm up until my hand.

I looked down. I really should stop thinking about him. but how do you do such a thing?

     'yes I will ask him' I eventually answered, obviously I wouldn't, but just to avoid any further discussions with my mother. 

On Sunday I spent the majority of the time again looking for leads for the case. The dinner with my mother undoubtedly played a part in that.

I arrived at the deserted graveyard with flowers in my hand, which I bought at the little shop nearby. The owner of the place knew my face by now, and as I always bought the same flowers he sometimes had them ready when he saw me approach.

I stared down at the grave.

    'Hey Jin, I am back again....' I took a deep breath...'I miss you. I have so much to tell you.

My lower lip trembled, and tears filled my eyes

     'Everything is so screwed up Jin. and you are the only one that could cheer me up.'

I laid down the flowers on his gravestone.

     'Like I promised you the first time I visited this place, I will not rest until I find the person responsible for your death, and make them accountable.'
