We stopped talking because we heard Lori exit the RV and Shane follow. I motioned for Daryl to be quiet and we both listened.

"I need you to help talk some sense into Rick. Look, this C.D.C. thing, Lori, it's a mistake. So you're backing him?" Shane asked her.

"What else would I do? He's my husband."

"Look, it may be time for you to play the dutiful wife, but you can't tell me that fixing your marriage is worth putting people's lives at risk."

"I think folks around here can make up their minds without bringing my marriage into it. It's a habit you need to break."

"Maybe you should take your own advice," I whispered. Daryl looked at me and I brushed it off.

"I guess I'll just add it to the list of habits that I'm breaking whether I like it or not."

Just then someone else exited the RV, "What habits?" Rick.

"Just talking about my need for a plan, man. So what is it? Are we leaving or not? Maybe y'all just want to stay here. We could hang some more tin cans." I climbed down the tree and Daryl followed.

Lori noticed me and her eyes went wide realizing we were listening. I smirked at her.

"We can't stay here. We both know that." Rick said.

"Everyone knows it." I said. They looked at me weirdly but agreed.

"I was just telling Shane I think we should trust your gut." Lori said.

"Let's do our sweep. Daryl, Y/n, are you coming?" Rick asked.

"Nah."

"I will." I responded. To be honest I just wanted to get under Lori's skin.

Dale, Rick, Shane, and I made our way to the forest.

"Tell you what, man, these people, man, they're not convinced. You know? You head to the C.D.C., you might be on your own. You gotta really consider whether you want to put Lori and Carl in that kind of spot." Shane said.

"I think he'll do what's best for his family." I responded emphasizing the word his. I also gave Shane a knowing look but the other two men missed it.

"Shut up this don't concern you."

"Y/n's right. I'm gonna do what's best for them."

"Best for your family? What's that? Exposing them to all kinds of risks?" He responded sourly.

I scoffed and Rick continued, "As opposed to what? Crossing 100 miles of hostile territory? If we're looking for a lifeline, I say swim toward the closest ship, not further out to sea. Why can't you back me up?"

"Look, I want to. It's just... I don't see it."

"If it was your family, you'd feel differently."

"What did you say to me? I kept 'em safe, man. I looked after them like they were my own. That's what I did."

"That still doesn't make them yours. Yeah, you cared for them. But it's Rick's wife and son. Of course, you are going to care for them in different ways."

He rolled his eyes at me.

"I didn't mean it like that." Rick said clearly not wanting a fight.

"Well, how'd you mean it? Go on, man. How'd you mean it?"

"You're misinterpreting me. You're just hearing it wrong."

"Yeah?"

A branch snapped. Rick drew away. From a distance, Shane's aim landed on Rick. Glaring, he dropped the gun, then noticed Dale and me watching him.

"Jesus." Dale muttered and Shane chuckled.

"I know. Gonna have to start wearing reflective vests out here. Seriously. Come on, man. Come on, man, let's go. Nothing out here." Shane said as he started to walk away.

I just walked behind them silently replaying what he and Lori said and how his gun lingered on RIck.

"I've been, uh... I've been thinking about Rick's plan. Now look, there are no... There are no guarantees either way. I'll be the first one to admit that. I've known this man a long time. I trust his instincts. I say the most important thing here is we need to stay together. So those of you that agree, we leave first thing in the morning." Shane said when we arrived back at camp.

I walked back over to my tree but Daryl stopped me.

"Seriously Y/n just stay in my tent. It's fine." He said a small crooked smile at his lips.

"Okay."

We walked back to his tent in comfortable silence. After we got back into the tent and he zipped it up I asked him, "Are you going to the C.D.C?"

"As long as you are..." He started. "I told you I'm not leaving again. Specially since I know what happened to you."

"Daryl..."

"What? What's wrong??"

"That's not the only one he gave me when you were gone.." I slowly lifted up my shirt and turned around. The ones on my back weren't as bad as the one on my side but they were still there.

"Darlin'....."

"It's okay Daryl. Most of those are from my parents from a long time ago."

"Y/n. It's not fine."

"Daryl. please don't push it. not tonight.."

"Okay."

"Goodnight Dar-bear."

After a few minutes, he responded. "I love you goodnight."

Those words drug me right out of my sleepy state.

"You what?"
