The Smallest of Smiles

Start from the beginning

Subaru put both of his hands over his face and sighed deeply...This was going to be a long ride.

*later*

After a while Regulus had finally calmed down and they had made it to the mansion where Subaru "met" Frederica, although unknown to anyone he already knew who she was.

While the others were discussing the Sanctuary, Regulus had remained mostly silent and he kept to himself. He had a book in his hand and when Subaru read the cover, he noticed that the book was about...Demi-humans?

At one point, he saw Regulus's neutral expression turn into a frown and he put down the book and walked away without explaination, even when Emilia asked where he was going.

He hadn't closed the book so Subaru had grabbed it and started reading the whole page.

It was a page about half-elfs.

The more Subaru read it, the more he got annoyed by it. It wasn't a book based on facts, rather a book about someone's "opinions" on half-elfs. And it wasn't in any positive way.

Subaru was slightly confused as to why Regulus seemed so annoyed by it, but he let it go as he went to find Regulus.

He needed to ask him if he wanted to go to the Sanctuary, although it wasn't necessery or anything like that. Even if Regulus didn't want to fight in the Sanctuary, the assassins would come here and most likely attack him.

Eventually, he found him standing by the window overlooking the giant front yard of the mansion.

Subaru: Regulus-senpai?

The white haired man turned to look at him with a look of utter apathy. Honestly, Subaru would have loved to just stay there and let him stare at him with that look. Only because the former Archbishop wasn't annoyingly ranting, insulting or doing anything. It felt calming to Subaru.

But he knew he had to say something before Regulus started a rant about "wasting his time".

Subaru: Are you going to come to the Sanctuary?

Regulus turned away from him as he looked back at the window while saying...

Regulus: No, I have no interest in coming along on one of those trips of yours like the capital.

Well, Subaru figured that much already

Subaru turned and walked away while waving towards Regulus.

Subaru: Okay, have fun here.

Before Subaru could walk any significant distance away from Regulus though, Regulus spoke once again.

Regulus: Usually you try and beg me to come along with you on whatever ridiculous trip you have in mind.

Subaru turned back to look at Regulus with a wry smirk on his face.

Subaru: Hey now, It's rude to assume that i'm just going to ask you something.

Subaru's wry attitude quickly went away and turned into one of pure shock as for a moment, although he wasn't sure, he thought that he saw a small smile on Regulus's face. Although that quickly turned back into his usual neutral expression.

After a couple of moments of silence between the two men, Regulus spoke, although rather annoyed this time.

Regulus: Are you just going to stand there and stare at me? Kindly stop forcing me to tolerate your presence longer than I could possibly need to.

Subaru blinked before quickly turning around and walking away while his mind tried to make sense of what just happened.

He shook his head as he had far more important matters to deal with rather than thinking pointlessly about that conversation.

*Later*

After they had set up everything, Emilia  Subaru and Otto rode away on their carriage towards the Sanctuary, leaving Regulus in the care of Frederica and soon to be Petra.

Subaru doubts that Regulus would pulverize Frederica while he was gone, considering that she isn't the kind of person to intentionally annoy or make fun of someone for enjoyment.

The black haired boy sighed as he resolved himself to repeat everything that he had to do in the Sanctuary. Minus the deaths of course.

*In the mansion*

Regulus wanted to go to his room, a simple need of someone as satisfied as him. It was rather simple, go to his room, open the door and enter. It's as simple as that.

So...Why is he currently infront of a library with a little girl sitting infront of him.

Beatrice looked annoyed at his presence which the white haired man couldn't fathom as to why she looked at him like that. He had questioned that idiot about it, her room moves around the mansion for some annoying reason, but from what he could tell she could control where the library went, so why was she angry with him?! She was the one who put the library here!

Beatrice: Why are you in Betty's forbidden library?

Regulus: I should be questioning you as to why you put your damn library in my room! This room was given to me so that I could live in it without interuptions and yet here you are putting your own room inside mine while blaming me for it?!

The little girl looked boredly at the white haired man before giving a quick sigh while waving her hand.

Beatrice: Betty doesn't have time for this, I suppose. Just leave and close the door, the library will be gone then

The white haired man didn't seem pleased by her words as his left hand twitched slightly.

Regulus: You- You! How dare you?! You force me into that damned library, and you refuse to apologize for it?! Who do you think you are to make light of me, me ,ME!?

The great spirit seemed to raise her guard slightly as she could feel the hint of blood lust in the air.

She closed her eyes as she seemed to be in deep thought for a moment, then her eyes snapped open in realization.

Beatrice:...I see...

She got off her chair and walked out of the library while ignoring Regulus.

He followed behind her while ranting about her ignoring him.

When they were both outside of the library, Regulus seemed to be more and more irritated by the second.

Regulus: What are you even doing?! First of all, you can have this book back since I finished it.

He grabbed a book out of his coat and handed it to Beatrice, which she took away quickly.

Regulus: And second of all-

She then walked back into her library and closed the door behind her. Veins started to buldge on Regulus's forehead as he opened the door so quickly that he almost ripped it off it's hinges.

But when he opened it he was greeted with the sight of his own room, no library or little girl in sight.

Regulus by now has crushed the handle of his door while if someone listened closely, they would be able to hear the sounds of teeth grinding.

That is why Petra decided to inform Regulus of her employment a day later, just so that he's calmed down a bit.

About 2000 words.
