12. Temporary Payback

Start from the beginning

"Surely there are more like us in the old country?" Claudia whispered to Louis, probably not wanting to disturb me. However, I do not care what they talk about.

"We might even meet the one who created Lestat." Louis had suggested to the girl. I don't even have to look up to tell that her face is turned dark.

"And what should we tell him then, that we killed his creation?" The attitude buried underneath her words is very obvious.

"Maybe he will cut off your heads for it." I finally look at them both. Surprise is written on their faces. My voice is almost gone away from me. I must sound like an old woman living on the river banks.

"Maybe he will tell us what all this means Louis!" She beamed at the man next to her side. So pleased with herself.

Louis said nothing more to her, only looking at me with pity. I do not need pity from this vampire. I surely wish to never see his young face ever again. He is no longer any family of mine. I'm sure Lestat would not blame me for wanting nothing to do with this bastard.

Suddenly I find the passing trees outside the window more interesting than the inside of this horrid carriage.

The sky is bright with hundreds of stars blanketing the dark blue. No clouds are in sight tonight. It's a pity that Lestat was murdered on such a beautiful night like this. Grand trees have slowed down in the past few minutes. We must be getting close to Claudia's suggested destination.

Soon we have come to a complete stop next to a steaming swap, most likely on the outskirts of town. I can smell the musty scent from inside the carriage. I have to hold my breath. Darkness consumes this place entirely. All I see from my place is dirty bubbly water filled with alligators. I shiver in disgust.

"Hurry, dawn is near," Louis said before getting up and opening the door. Claudia is right behind him in her light green dress. Those curls bounce with each step. I regret having to go along with this sickness.

The male vampire ordered the driver to get inside and draw the curtains of the windows. There was no protest from the old man who has served us since we returned to this city long ago.

Then Claudia came up and takes my hand without warning, dragging me to who knows where. I simply have to go if I want to have a last look at Lestat before they just dump the body like the trash they think he has always been.

We arrive far away on the bank of the swamp. The sour smell of the water stings my nostrils. I fight the urge to gag. I'm startled when Louis comes up next to us with the body in hand. My heart aches all over again at the sight.

The memories of his death are so fresh and horrible. I go up to him slowly and caress his covered face for the last time. I will miss this man with all my heart. They will never understand the love me and Lestat shared. It was ours and ours alone had been taken away.

I will come back from the burning pits of hell to haunt them if I must. it might be the only way I can seek justice for their actions. Maybe I'll be given the chance to do so in my next life.

Before I could do anything else the little vampire pulled me back softly to allow Louis to shove the dead man's body into the water with no comforting words. Both my hands cover my mouth to prevent a sob from escaping.

I fall to my knees and silently cry. My heart breaking just a little bit more.

That's when I feel it hit me all at once. I can't control the vomit that rolls up my throat. I puke my guts out on the grass in front of me, getting my hands soaked in the process. Bloody bile coated my shaking pale hands. My head is now pounding in a steady rhythm.
