17. A Dark Knight, Part Two

Start from the beginning

"What did you do?!"

"I took Gotham's white knight. And I brought him down to my level. It wasn't hard. Madness, as you know, is like gravity - all it takes is a little push."

(Y/N) stood, and radioed Lucius. "Lucius. Find Harvey Dent." he turned to Natasha. "Your part here's finished. You can go home now."

"No," she said. "I want to help you."

"Nat. If this goes the wrong way, I don't want you hurt as well. Please, just go."

She nodded. (Y/N) turned away.

"Wait!" Natasha called back. (Y/N) turned around. "I need to tell you something." A pause. "I love you."

The Joker began cackling behind them.

In the heat of the moment, (Y/N) didn't know what to say. When he finally spoke, he only spoke two words.

"I know."

When (Y/N) got to the burned warehouse where Rachel had died, he found Harvey, Gordon, and the latter's family. Gordon's son was being held at gunpoint by Harvey, who had complete nihilistic rage in his eyes.

"I've done plenty wrong, Gordon," Harvey was saying. "Just not quite enough. Yet."

(Y/N) stepped forward. "You don't want to hurt the boy, Dent."

Harvey turned. "It's not about what I want. It's about what's fair! You thought we could be decent men, in an indecent time. You thought we could lead by example. You thought the rules could bend, but not break. You were wrong. You were cruel." He held up his coin. "And the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased. Unprejudiced. Fair."

"Nothing fair ever came out of the barrel of a gun, Dent."

"His boy's got the same chance she had. Fifty-fifty."

"What happened to Rachel wasn't chance. We decided to act. We three. We knew the risks and we acted as one. We are all responsible for the consequences."

Harvey looked at him, pleading. "Then why was it only me who lost everything?"

A sense of guilt appeared in (Y/N)'s heart. "It wasn't."

"The Joker chose me!"

"Because you were the best of us. He wanted to prove that even someone as good as you could fall."

"And he was right."

"But you're fooling yourself if you think that you're letting chance decide. You're the one pointing the gun, Harvey. So point it at the people responsible. We all acted as one. Gordon, me, and you."

Harvey nodded. "Fair enough. You first." He pulled out his coin and flipped. Tails. He aimed his gun and shot (Y/N) in the abdomen.

"My turn." Harvey pointed the gun at himself, then flipped. Heads. He then turned the gun back at Gordon's son. "Your turn, Gordon."

"You're right, Harvey," Gordon pleaded. "Rachel's death was my fault. Punish me."

"I'm about to. Tell your son it's going to be alright. Lie. Like I lied."

Gordon looked into his son's eyes. "It's going to be alright, son."

Harvey flipped.
