What if you would find yourself in the Glade?
What if all of the sudden two boys are head over heels for you?
Everyone expected another boy to arrive with the box, but to their surprise they were greeted by a girl...
The greenie looked at the whole scene traumatized, his mouth was slightly open and every color vanished from his face. He also must feel guilty. Chuck stood next to him and it was clear to see that the pre-teen wasn't able to cope as well. Maybe it would have been better if Chuck had stayed in the Homestead? This clearly wasn't a good place for a kid, it was brutal. But everything in the maze was brutal and there was no way to protect yourself nor others. This was something you once again got to feel in such a situation.
The sound of grinding from stone to stone echoed through the Glade and you noticed that Ben was already pushed in the corridor between the doors of the gate. The Gladers who had been pushing Ben between the doors took a few steps back, because Ben was already walking into the maze by himself, as he would have been crushed by the stone doors otherwise. The corridor became narrower and narrower until you heard an impingement of stone. The doors were closed. Ben's screams were blocked as soon as the doors had closed. Everything was silent, you could even hear a pin needle drop.

That night you were unable to sleep. You lied in your hammock and held your breath. You were waiting for a noise, a scream, the sound of a griever, anything that could give you some idea if Ben was dead or still alive. But no one had survived a night in the maze so far, hence it was very unlikely that Ben's heart was still beating. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. It wasn't your fault. It wasn't your fault. It wasn't your fault. You repeated this sentence in your head, in hope that you would eventually believe it.
You tossed yourself around, trying to find a comfortable position to fall asleep. However, the feelings and thoughts of blame pinched into your skin like thorns. So no matter on which side you tried to rest, it always felt uncomfortable. You let out a sigh and sat up, rubbing your face. You were incredibly tired, but your mind didn't allow you to rest. Would you ever sleep soundly after today?
"Y/n?" you heard the familiar voice of Newt, he spoke quietly, careful to not wake anybody. "Yeah?" you murmured. You didn't turn around to his hammock, but heard him sitting up "Is everything okay?" he asked, still whispering. "I'm just unable to sleep, that's all" you lied, you didn't want to cause Newt any trouble, but the Second-in-Command knew you well enough to know that you didn't tell him the truth. "Do you want to go for a walk?" he offered, "That would be great" you answered and stood up. You were too awake to even think about sleep, so going on a nightly walk with Newt seemed like a way better option than drowning in an ocean of thoughts.
Newt walked close by your side as you breathed in the nightly air and felt yourself relax a little bit. Somehow it reminded you of your bonfire night after you two had put Minho to sleep and philosophied over the maze. Back then Newt had been able to provide you comfort and calm you down and he didn't fail this time as well. There was simply something in his presence which spreaded such a warmth. Like the first rays of sunlight after a cold, long dark winter which melted the snow and uncovered the first flowers of the season.
"What's troubling your mind, love?" Newt questioned after you were far enough away from the homestead for anyone to hear you talk. "I feel like it was my fault" you explained and Newt grabbed your hand. "Then tell me how you should have prevented any of this" he said in a soft voice and you nodded. He was right. "I know how you feel, love. I often feel the same as the Second-in-Command. I always know that rationally I need to make some choices, but often I am unable to cope with these choices emotionally" he shared his experience with you.
"But you make these choices for the common good" you spoke, "I know. I know that just like you know, that what happened to Ben is in no way your fault, but often our hearts and minds say different things. Of course everything would be easier if both would have the same opinion, but maybe this misery is what makes us humans." Newt started "but we still need to remind ourselves what is right and wrong. If you'd feel bad for everything that happens around you and is completely out of your control, you'd feel bad your whole life."
"Why are you always right?" you asked and turned to Newt with a small smile on your lips. "I'm not always right... but most times" he answered and even though it was dark, you could still make up a grin on Newt's face. "I'm sorry that I haven't been around much lately" he suddenly apologized and the smile vanished from your lips "Are you kidding? No one has been there for me as much as you have been" you protested and held his hand a little bit tighter. "Well, I'm soothed to know that you see it that way, but I still missed you a lot. Things have been crazy lately" he confessed.
"I missed you too, Newt" you admitted and looked down to the ground, too flustered to look at the boy beside you. A slight breeze was able to cool down your face a little bit. Suddenly Newt stopped and you turned to him. The moon and stars were bright enough for you to see Newt's face "What?" you asked under your breath, a little bit dazed. "I just wanted to see your face" he answered and put a strand of hair behind your ear. He mustered your face like he wanted to remember every small detail.
"Y/n, you're beautiful" he spoke in such a soft voice that it was nearly carried away by the wind. "Thank you" you whispered, but Newt shook his head "No, Y/n. I didn't mean only your appearance. Your whole being - You are a beautiful human from the inside and the outside. I have never met someone so pure in their heart and I can't handle the thought that you think you've done anything wrong." he stated. "Newt, I'm not perfect" you answered, your voice was slightly shaking.
"To me, you are." he replied and pulled you into a tight hug. Newt buried his face in your neck and you leaned against him. Time seemed to slow down. You truly had missed him, you haven't even noticed until this moment how much you've missed him. It felt like you have been holding your breath for a long time and now finally were able to breathe in. Feeling the warmth of Newt's skin was something so comforting and calming that it felt like an essential need. You wished that he would never let you go again.
