Chapter 23 - The Republic expendables

"General wants to speak to you, (Y/N)."

it wasn't an angry command, but he wasn't his normal, relaxed self either. He walked away to where the majority of everyone else was. I let out a small sigh and stood up,

"Sorry boys, duty calls. It was nice to meet you Roger, Roger."

as they bid farewell, I couldn't help but smile at their names again. Walking through our temporary camp with troopers scattered about, I made it to Obi-Wan and Cody that stood by the main street, facing the north crevice. Obi-Wan had his usual pose with his arms crossed, and Cody had both his hands on his hips. I stopped next to Obi-Wan and rested my own hands on my tool belt,

"Any news on Waxer and Boil? Did they come back?"

looking expectantly between the two I was met with hesitant eyes. My mood dropped immediately,

"They're not back are they?"

Obi-Wan spoke with a reluctant tone of voice,

"No. But I don't believe that they're dead, yet."

I scoffed at him,

"See now why I disagreed with your orders, Master?"

he rubbed his beard in thought as his eyes never left the horizon. As silence fell between us I glanced in Cody's direction, he was troubled to say the least that two of his troopers were still missing. My petty side so badly wanted to tell him 'I told you so' but I knew better than to rub it in his face when he was showing genuine concern for them. I looked down at my vambrace and checked the updates from when I had been asleep. Nothing for the most part, but there was one update that showed tiny movement a click northeast from here, deeper into the village. It seemed like nothing, but I knew better than that,

"I think I got something."

both of them looked at me and Cody even took a few steps closer,

"What? Is it them?"

now Cody was right next to me as he observed my face for something that could determine the state or location of his troopers. I tapped a few times on my vambrace as I spoke,

"Well it's not much, but I set up a locator when you called in the rest yesterday, and during the night it picked up some unusual movement a click northeast from here."

Cody was a little disappointed that it wasn't more than that as his face fell slightly. I very carefully nudged his shoulder to make him look at me,

"Hey, they're gonna be okay. They've got each other."

he stayed quiet but gave a court nod. Obi-Wan spoke up instead,

"Northeast? That's exactly where we are headed. We'll move out immediately. (Y/N), take Luroon and scout ahead, let us know if you find them."

I saw how Cody went to interject Obi-Wan's orders as he himself wanted to go but I cut in,

"Understood, Master."

Obi-Wan bowed his head and went to mobilise the camp as I turned to the uncertain Commander,

"Look, you may still not like me from last night, but, I too want to see both of them back unharmed. I'm not one to hold a grudge against people, so I'm letting it go, and you don't have to like me Commander, but at least trust that I would do anything for all of your brothers to walk out alive."

it was difficult to determine exactly what was going on in his head, a conflict for sure. But even for someone like me that usually finds it easy to read people, could only see the outline of the conflict within him. Deciding to woman up I straightened out my back and stretched out my hand,
