Quietly, she exited the room and everyone's shoulders visibly dropped in relief at the few more minutes they could have before the exam started. Amelie twirled the pencil in her hand when a paper was thrown onto her desk from her right. Glancing at at the human boy, who was nervously rubbing his chin, she unfolded the piece of paper.
CAN WE TALK?
Before she could think of a response, Natalie entered the room again with the crease between her brows deeper than before. Quickly, Amelie stuffed the paper into her pockets and tried to remain cool and collected ( which she was not— at all ).
"I can't find him," Natalie shook her head. "But Mr. Yukimura is upstairs grading papers. Do you want me to try him?"
"We have to start," The teacher sighed. "We can ask for his assistance during the first break."
Turning to the students with a snide smirk, he announced, "You may now open your test booklets and begin."
With a wary sigh, Amelie opened the test and began to work through the questions. The multiple choice questions were fairly easy and so were the essay questions as well. Time seemed to fly like the wind because soon she was entering the math section. As she was about to start, a thud knocked her out of her thoughts and made her look behind her to the girl on the floor.
"Sydney! Are you all right?" Mrs Martin rushed to the girl to help her up. Sydney nodded tiredly, "I'm okay— I just got kind of dizzy."
Mrs Martin held Sydney's wrist for a moment, analyzing it worriedly, "Sydney, how long have you had this?" Asked the woman. Amelie couldn't see what she meant but that didn't stop her stomach from stirring.
"I don't know."
"Ms. Martin, do I need to stop the test?" The other teacher asked expectantly.
"No— Um, it's fine," She shook her head hesitantly. "Everybody stay in your seats. I'll, um, be back in a minute. Nobody leaves the room."
A few minutes passed of untuned silence. Amelie leaned back on her chair, her pencil swinging between her index and thumb and she tried not to focus on the sudden whispers in her head.
"Amelie."
Her head snapped to the right at the familiar voice, only to find no one there. Stiles turned to her with furrowed brows only for her to shake her head distantly, turning back to the front.
"Get back! No! Do not come in here! Get back outside!" Natalie's voice screamed in the hallway. Scott turned to Stiles and Amelie with a confused expression making them all stand up and head to the classroom door, where they saw her pushing students out of the school door.
The woman turned back to them with a panicked look but quickly covered it up with a calm expression. "Back to your seats! Now. Please," She scolded, making them hesitantly head back inside.
🥰
Amelie was wrong when she said they could survive three hours— because they couldn't. It wasn't possible to survive three hours trapped in a classroom without something awful happening, like a disease spreading between them.
So far, Amelie wasn't experiencing any symptoms but the whispers calling for her were seemingly getting louder as she continuously looked around her in fear. She stood with Malia, Kira and Stiles— trying to aggressively ignore the latter.
"Bet they're thinking smallpox," Stiles murmured to them.
"Not likely," The voice of the teacher made them turn to look at him in confusion. "Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in 1979. We've only managed to completely eradicate two viruses in history. The other was rinderpest— it killed cows."
