He looked up at her when she sat down on her heels to help him saying, "Oh, it's alright, Draco," in a voice so light and delicate he almost didn't hear it.
He blinked.
The girl had hair so bright it actually looked whiter than his, and it was long enough it trailed on the floor when she bent down to pick up the fallen books. Her eyes were sparkling, and she was wearing a necklace made out of corks, a small, diamond tiara on her head that shone blue in the light.
Not to mention the fact that she just called him Draco like they were best friends—he had never recalled hearing about knowing a Ravenclaw girl with hair like that; if he had, he would have remembered it. He wondered what her name was.
"I'm really sorry about bumping into you," he said, calling on his best manners to not gape in shock as he placed the last book off the floor and into the girl's hands.
"Don't worry," she said in that fluttering tone. "I drop things all the time. You kind of get used to it after a while."
He cracked a smile despite himself and was about to leave so he could shake his head in wonderment when she stopped him in his tracks.
"Where are you going? You haven't even asked me my name yet. I'm Luna if you were wondering."
What the hell.
"Um, I'm Draco?"
"Oh, I already know that, silly."
What? He asked himself again. This was by far the most confusing interaction he had had since the Memory Catastrophe.
"Well, I assume you were wondering because you were looking at me oddly. I have a bit of a knack for knowing what people are thinking, did you know? Some call it legilimency, but it's really just intuition. Most people just don't know how to listen to theirs.
Not for the first time in the past minute, Draco asked himself one question. It was, yep, you guessed it.
What.
Luna laughed at the face he must have been making, and the noise twittered through his ears like a fluttering bird. It was almost like the sound of glass unbreaking.
That was the only way Draco could properly describe it without sounding mental.
"I'm sure you think this is quite weird, but I assure you you're not going mental. Well, good luck Draco in whatever you're trying to find."
She then turned and started to skip through the library, the books in her right hand swinging along with her legs.
"Wait, I—wait!"
The girl stopped mid-skip, her hair waving side to side as it stayed in the momentum even after she wasn't skipping and she turned her head. It almost looked like it was in water.
Draco realised he had lost his train of thought and had to pluck it out from the back of his mind with a quick shake of his head to get it back.
"You know about legilimency?"
"A tad," she said with a curiously small tilt of her head. "My mother used to teach me about strange forms of magic. My father used to do the same thing, but not as often anymore. Why?"
"I was wondering...if you could help?" It ended up as a question.
He barely even knew this girl, yet he felt a certain pull towards her like she had placed a summoning charm on him without noticing. She smiled brightly and it lit her entire face up like she was a shining star in the dark of night.
