Chapter 13: Caller

Start from the beginning

"Considering the effective range of a bomb that could be put into a car, the fishing tackle store's parking lot is the perfect place to leave the explosive," Kunikida finished.

Dazai seemed amused at Kunikida's sentence, his lips curving up a bit as he glanced over at his partner. "Bingo..."

A few seconds later, Dazai's phone started ringing. He picked it up and didn't speak at all, instead listening to someone speak. It didn't take long before he closed it again and announced, "the military's bomb squad has found the device but there's still a problem. It's connected to a motion sensing timer. They don't think they'll be able to disarm before sundown."

Atsushi lightly gasped at this, a defeated look crossing his face. All he could think about was all the things he wanted to protect, needed to protect form that bomb. He quickly glanced at you before looking back at Dazai who continued speaking.

"They've started evacuating nearby residents but they're not sure there's enough time," Dazai concluded.

"Oh no," Atsushi mumbled, voice slowly trailing off. He only got more anxious each passing second.

"There's still hope," Dazai exclaimed, "they said we can deactivate the bomb if we can transmit a remote stop signal to it."

Kunikida growled out in frustration, "but how do we do that?" Then, he suddenly gasped and slid the car to a halt, turning the car sideways in the middle of the road.

At this sudden movement, Atsushi found himself falling over into your lap while you banged your head roughly against the wall. Atsushi yelled, "WH-WHAT'S GOING ON!?" He was a blushing mess as he sat back up again, straightening his back.

"I thought we were friends, Kunikida," you groaned, rubbing your head.

Even if anyone did notice his slight frown after you spoke, no one said anything. He quickly grabbed his phone and placed it up to his ear as he explained, "I got a call."

Atsushi deadpanned at him, clearly upset at their current situation, "Oh," he mumbled with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Yes, hello?" Kunikida spoke into the phone, "yes, Rokuzo, what have you got?"

Soon enough, you could hear a large abundance of car horns coming from angry drivers that were blocked by you. "Hey, guys," Atsushi sighed, "I think we're causing a bit of a traffic jam."

Then suddenly, Atsushi got a call. "Oh, hello? Hey, Ranpo! Right. Yes."

Dazai got a call as well, quickly opening up his phone and answering, "yes? President. The miliatries?"

"You all have got to be kidding me," you groaned until you felt a buzzing in your pocket as well. You looked at it and gasped as you saw Chuuya's contact. "Chuuya? Why are you calling me? You almost never call me."

"Hey, (Y/N), just wanted to check in and make sure you were doing okay," Chuuya responded, letting out a small sigh of relief as he heard your voice. "I heard that you got shot and wanted to make sure you were doing alright both mentally and physically."

"Hold up," you exclaimed, "how the hell do you know all of this?"

"Uh..." Chuuya seemed to blank for a moment before answering, "your sister. She talked my damn ear off and wouldn't stop teasing me about me worrying about you. You need to get her under control."

You chuckled, "well, I'm fine. Thanks for checking in and being concerned. Also, don't worry. I'll give her a good talking-to later." Seeing that everyone was almost finished with their calls, you decided to draw yours towards an end too. "Unfortunately though, I've got to go. Have a nice day. Goodbye, Chuu!"

"Alright," Chuuya replied, "please stay safe. I miss you, (Y/N)." Then with that, you hung up. You couldn't see it, but on the other side of the phone Chuuya was smiling, happy to have heard your voice at least once that day.

Meanwhile, the four of you in the car started discussing who called you and what it was about. "I got a call from Rokuzo," Kunikida explained as he swerved the car around and got back on the road again. "Someone recently ordered a bomb transmittor plus other equipment delivered to a former defense facility."

"Ranpo reached a similar conclusion," Atsushi added.

"That settles it," Kunikida sighed.

"And I just got a call from the President," Dazai stated, "he just got informed by the military. The taxi driver is dead."

"He's dead?"

"How can that be?" Atsushi exclaimed, "I thought they were holding him in their isolation ward for extra protection."

Dazai replied, "they were, but he died after suddenly collapsing in his cell. The forensics team hasn't determined the cause of death, but the guards noticed the numbers "00" on his palm."

Kunikida asked, "there were numbers on his hand? How strange... what in the world is going on?"

A few seconds after that, everyone turned to you. Dazai inquired, "(Y/N), who called you?"

"Oh," you responded, "the person who frequents my cafe just called me. He wanted to make sure I was doing alright since he heard about me getting shot from my sister."

The car fell silent for a while until Atsushi spoke up, asking, "is there... anything going on between you two possibly?"

"Well..." You thought for a second before replying, "he's a good friend. He's kind, caring, and strong." Dazai smirked at your response. Game over, Chuuya. Kunikida and Atsushi sighed in relief. But then you continued, "he just lights up my day, y'know? Sometimes he brings me little gifts and he's super sweet. Not to mention how good he looks every day."

"Oh? Really now?" Dazai's smirk fell once he realized Chuuya hadn't lost yet. "Well, I guess we all have to up our game too then..." Kunikida and Atsushi glanced at him, not saying anything.

You looked at him confusedly. "What do you mean by that?"

Dazai's smirk returned as he turned to look over towards you at the back seat. "Nothing."

(A/N): Hello everyone!! I hope you enjoyed the thirteenth chapter! I apologize that there aren't many moments with certain characters, honestly I think I'm starting to pick favorites when it comes to certain scenes. I promise I'll find a way to add in Gin, Akutagawa, and Tachihara a bit more in the future.

By the way, I apologize how dumb Dazai's character seems in some situations. Honestly there's some instances where I can't let Dazai be the genius he is because he'd probably know too much and it would cause all of the planned out scenes to turn into a dumpster on fire, sorry.

A hint for the future...

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the story and don't forget to vote, comment, and maybe follow if you really liked it!

Everyone have a spectacular day/night!!
