His eyes were already bloodshot red, his teeth bared, and Levi watched as snot began to drip from his nose as his cheeks turned a crimson red.
"What if I say no, huh?! What if I said I'd never talk to you again?! Would you still choose him?!" Zeke couldn't stop the boiling rage he felt. He just wanted to yell, to scream, and Levi was the only other person in the room. Though, what came off to Zeke as just anger, Levi only saw his insecurities, his manipulations, and the vulnerability Zeke was throwing out as a last ditch resort to get Levi to choose him. But, Levi was certain.
"Yes Zeke, I would still choose him." Levi spoke calmly, hoping his soft tone would somehow drain the unbearable and tight energy the room had instantly culminated.
"Fuck. You, Levi." Zeke spat, as he stood, his fists clenched at his sides. He didn't know where he was going to go, but the chair was just making him stuffy. He walked closer to the open window, leaning his head into the swift breeze that would pass through every now and then.
"Zeke, you can't seriously be thinking of ending friendship over this."
"Stop saying my name like that! Just stop... stop talking for a little while."Zeke took a deep breath through his mouth (his nose being too stuffy) and dropped his head back down into his arms, his back heaving up and down, silently sobbing.
Levi ran his hands through his hair, he wasn't about to admit all the yelling was making his head throb...hangovers. He knew this was bound to happen, to either man he chose, but it didn't make the process any easier. He kept his actions silent, knowing that whatever he was feeling, Zeke was feeling 10x worse than him.
At one point, Levi bent down to retrieve Zeke's glasses, which remained forgotten on the floor, but as he approached Zeke, he raised his hand out to him, a silent sign to back off.
He had no idea that his presence was making Zeke physically sick.
"No, Levi, we're not ok. I'm....not ok." He mumbled into his arms. But Levi heard nonetheless and he began to fiddle with the frame of Zeke's glasses.
"So, that's it? Our friendship is over. Just like that?" The room was silent once more before,
"What do you think, Levi? Of course not- Erwins not worth that much." He picked his head out of his arms this time, though his gaze stayed fixated outside the window.
"Look, I'm sorry. It was wrong of me to selfishly think about myself and think everything would be fine after this. That's me completely ignoring and not even trying to think of how you feel right now. I don't want anybody to be hurt and I'm sorry for creating this situation in the first place..."
"No. Levi, I did this. I made that stupid bet. I made you second guess your relationship with Erwin because I was so mad I hadn't made my move sooner. I did this. I ruined us." Zeke said defeatedly, as he hung his head down once more.Levi knew both of them were technically correct, they both had done equally horrible things to each other, and they were both horribly beating themselves up over it. Zeke, maybe, just a little more than Levi.
"Just, please don't blame yourself Levi, I need to deal with the repercussions of my own actions."
"Ok, Zeke. I won't" Levi replied, even though he knew it wouldn't be that easy. He just wanted to put Zeke at ease, if just for a little while. Levi proceeded to watch out of the corner of his eye as Zeke wiped his cheeks, sniffling in an attempt to clear his stuffed up nose, but to no avail.
"Why him though Levi? Was I not good enough?" Levi couldn't help but pinch the bridge of his nose in frustration. He understood Zeke was upset and knew this was just his way of dealing with all his emotions. Levi let out a sigh.
"What does that have to do with what we were just talking about?"
"I don't know...I just need to know." Levi used his hands to turn himself in Zekes direction, still sitting atop the bed.
"I love both of you, I really do, I've had plenty of time to think of how I feel. You both are your own person, You being my best friend, my cocky friend, the one to brighten me up after a long, hard day. And Erwin is the tall, shy man that was once my study partner, he always made me feel comfortable and accepted."As Levi talked, Zeke began to periodically glance in his direction.
"I had to choose one of you, and the decision wasn't an easy one. It was filled with a lot of regret, guilt, and maybe ¾ a bottle of whiskey. Something I had to think deeply about was everyone's flaws, despite always wanting to see past those. You both get angry when you're upset...but you Zeke, you have manipulated me in ways I don't ever want to think about. You tore me away from Erwin and made me doubt myself and my own romantic feelings...and for that, I can never forgive you." Zeke shuddered.
"Erwin always apologized when he felt something was wrong, he didn't dwell on fights, and he always made me feel cared about. Us, Zeke, our fights lasted for days, and apologies always felt forced. And don't get me started on whatever the hell was in that sketchbook of yours. Does that make a little bit more sense now?" Zeke nodded his head silently, thoughts silently swirling through his mind as more tears flooded down his cheeks.
"I know you think you're not good enough, which isn't the case. To me, it's your mannerisms. Everything we did, Zeke, was perfect, you were perfect." Zeke could only nod along, listening intently to Levi's words.
"I do love you very much, but this relationship...this...thing we have going on isn't healthy. And I need to end it." Zeke looked up at Levi, gazing into his stearn, narrow eyes. So this was it. It was final.Levi had chosen Erwin.
Zeke sauntered over to Levi, taking a spot on the bed right next to him, wiping his nose with his arm.
"Levi I am so, so sorry. I can't say I didn't know what I was doing because I was fully aware of every action I made. I intended them to hurt Erwin, to finally get what I had wanted but it seems I hurt you more in the process, and for that I am so sorry." Levi nodded his head, a silent gesture as he was listening to Zeke's words.
"I don't know if I can forgive you."
"I don't expect you to. The things I did, the things I drew, were disgusting. I'm truly ashamed of my actions, as someone who has romantic feelings for you and as your best friend, I can't believe I was horrible enough to do all those things."
"Zeke, I do care for you, and I honestly don't want whatever the hell we have going on to ruin our friendship. I want to possibly help you better yourself, If you're up to seeing and talking with someone?" Zeke tilted his head, finally looking Levi in the eyes again.
He didn't want Zeke to feel targeted, to feel like he was this horrible monster of a human. To feel like his actions entirely ruined both of their lives. So he continued,
"I know how you feel, I think I have some of those same feelings as you right now. And I believe talking to someone, together, can help us get through this." It was silent for a moment, probably as Zeke formulated the thoughts in his mind again.
"Yeah. I like that idea." Zeke whispered, a slight smile adorning his lips as he continued to wipe helplessly at his eyes. Levi inwardly let out a sigh of relief, knowing the situation was finally calming down.
They were comfortable like that, Zeke slowly stopping the onslaught of tears and Levi running his fingers around the ridges of Zekes glasses. Levi slowly handed them back to Zeke, taking his time to not startle or ruin the calm atmosphere that was comfortably replacing the old stuffy feeling. Levi stood, brushing off his shirt and beginning to open his arms wide.
"Apology hug?" He asked meekly, hoping that his action wasn't ruining the process they had just made together. Zeke smiled, placing his glasses once again atop his nose before joining Levi in an embrace. The smell of strawberries for Zeke was overwhelming but knowing that Levi would always be there for him, even if it wasn't romantically, and knowing that change was about to come, he couldn't help but hold the embrace a little longer than he should've.
"Hey." Zeke interrupted, "You shouldn't keep Loverboy waiting." He said as he pulled away, slightly pushing Levi towards the door.
"Ok, ok." Levi mumbled, a smile adorning his lips as he made his way to the door. Zeke sat himself in his rolly chair, getting a full twirl in before he shouted,
"Levi, wait!" Levi paused in the doorframe, one hand of the doorknob and his other against the wall,
"Yeah?"
"By the way...I'm allergic to strawberries."
