Chapter 36: Newbie

Start from the beginning

"Then in that case," Kyouka mumbled, looking up at Atsushi and you. "I only know of one other option."

She started running off into the distance, causing you to yell out, "hey, wait!"

Meanwhile, Atsushi screamed, "where are you going!?"

Despite your yells, Kyouka paid no attention to either of you. You both had no choice but to sit and wait. "Well... we're all dead," you mumbled, knowing the little girl too well even after only a day of knowing her.

A minute or two after she disappeared, the lights all turned off, and Atsushi instantly put his hand on your shoulder. Even in the darkness you could see his bright eyes, shimmering with fear for what was about to happen next. He was one of the few people in the agency who took his work seriously, so the situation you both were in obviously made him anxious and uncomfortable.

After a second of observing Atsushi, you shouted out to no one in particular, "what the hell is going on?"

Apparently, Kyouka failed the mission in the worst way imaginable: severely injuring the judge with the stun gun.

Now, you sat next to her and Atsushi on a bench in the middle of a scenic park. Atsushi had just gotten both of you crepes, and now you both had to comfort her.

"The President settled everything," Atsushi explained, "apparently he's friends with the judge."

Kyouka stared solemnly at her crepe. "It was all going well until that last part..."

You looked at her with nothing but disbelief. "No offense, but I think more went wrong than just the last part."

She tilted her head at you and questioned, "how so?"

Before you could answer her, Atsushi pointed out, "I see you're still holding onto that phone."

Looking down at her chest, you too noticed the small cellular device attached to a string around her neck. It had a little bunny keychain on it. But as Atsushi made his observation, she clutched it tightly, holding it up and closer to her heart.

"I had the service provider make some changes," she informed you both, "it's still important to me."

While you nodded in understanding, Atsushi muttered, "hey, Kyouka... there's something that I wanted to bring up."

"No," you spoke up for her before he could say anything more, already guessing what he was going to say.

Atsushi looked at you, raising an eyebrow in confusion. "But... this has nothing to do with you. You can't speak for her. Maybe she would want to help the agency."

"Help the agency?" Kyouka's eyes shone bright, showing her agreement. "How could I do that?"

"Trust me," you desperately tried to explain, "I've been in a position like hers before. She wouldn't want to use her powers again."

Once he heard that, Atsushi turned towards you, a small expression of shock overcoming his face. He suddenly remembered that he knew nothing about your past.

A sudden whimper from Kyouka brought his attention back to the situation at hand. "Use my powers?" Her voice instantaneously became louder as she looked more and more panicked. "I won't! Never... I'm never using it again..."

Not even a second after she made that promise to herself, the sound of a ringing phone shattered the unspoken peace in the air. The small sound turned the serene landscape into a battlezone.

When Kyouka didn't pick up, the phone went to voicemail, allowing a deep but feminine voice to come through. "Demon Snow," she demanded, "punish those who would dare teach Kyouka a world of lies."

At that very moment, you felt something slice your back. Atsushi and you yelped in unison, the blade cutting clean through your flesh.

While Atsushi fell face-first to the ground, you fell on your back, only adding to your pain. You groaned in displeasure at the concrete hitting your open wound.

A small chuckle in the distance took your attention off of him. You could easily recognize the voice. It was the voice of the person who had just told Demon Snow to cut your backs open. All you could do for now though was glare at her.

It was a woman, dressed up in a beautiful black kimono and pink and red haori. A large velvet sash put the finishing touches on her dress. She wore an excessive amount of makeup and wore her red hair over one eye and the back tied into a bun. Inside of her bun were two chopsticks and a sort of weird hairpiece. All together, she looked quite lovely and elegant.

The woman also held a large red umbrella in her hands, only adding to her beauty. You had to admit, she was definitely pretty and you found yourself calming down a bit. Just a person's appearance could sometimes be another's poison. You had already fallen into her little trap.

As she began walking over, you could start to smell the strong perfume she had on.

"Even the blood of vermin is beautiful to behold when it splatters," the woman at the end of the pathway in the park giggled, "there's nothing else quite like it. Wouldn't you agree, my dear?"
