Chapter 40: Doll

"No, we're only here to protect him..." Higuchi responded, "...I think..."

You raised an eyebrow but decided not to question her further.

"Either way, we should be the least of your concerns right now," Higuchi admitted.

"Why is that?"

"Get away from them," a familiar voice spoke up as they appeared in the alleyway.

You turned your head to see Dazai standing just at the front of the alleyway. He glared daggers at Higuchi and Gin, as if threatening them to leave you alone.

Higuchi raised her gun up to point it at him. "Don't move or I'll shoot," she warned.

"That's funny coming from you after you just said you're only here to protect him," you shot at her.

"Trust me when I say that a certain superior of yours would be very thankful to you if you let them go," Dazai explained, nodding his head in an odd direction as if to gesture to Gin that she should get off of you.

Gin immediately stood back up and put her knife away, allowing you to get up and walk cautiously over to Dazai. Higuchi's gun followed you all the way as you walked towards him.

The moment you were close enough to him, he turned to you and asked, "are you alright? They didn't harm you, did they?" His eyes held nothing but care and worry for you.

"No, I'm fine. Her grip was actually quite loose," you explained.

He placed his hand on your shoulder and sighed, "good... now I suggest you check on Atsushi and make sure Haruno and Naomi are safe. I have a bad feeling about the Port Mafia being here. Make sure not to get in any danger. I'll take care of Gin and Higuchi here."

"Alright," you responded, nodding your head and slowly leaving the alleyway.

Once you left, before Dazai could say anything, Higuchi whispered into Gin, "so how much do you know about (Y/N) (L/N)?"

Gin shrugged and tilted her head slightly back and forth as if to say that she didn't know a lot about them, but she did at least know something.
"I'd like you to tell me more about them later. The boss just doesn't invite anybody into the mafia. There must be a reason... Also, they are quite an interesting person."

Although she was shocked by Higuchi's sudden change of attitude towards you, Gin quickly nodded her head before turning to focus on the current problem at hand: Dazai.

Meanwhile, you were calmly walking out of the alleyway until you laid your eyes upon one of the most shocking scenes you've ever seen in your entire life.

Atsushi held Naomi up by her throat, slowly choking her. As for Haruno, she was currently laid out against the ground with a nasty head injury. A small child stood away from them, watching the fight with a gleeful smile on their face. Dazai had only left for a minute or two, and yet all chaos had broken out in such a short time.

"Atsushi! Stop!" You yelled desperately.

You were prepared to defend Haruno and Naomi until his bleeding eyes focused on you. He was still Atsushi, but the bleeding eyes showed that something was wrong here.

"No, not you too," Atsushi whined as he continued staring at you. "Forgive me for this!" Then he dropped Naomi and rushed towards you, claws bared.

With that, the gruesome fight between lovers began.

"Put the gun down, (Y/N)!" Atsushi screamed, desperately trying to reason with you as he swung at your hand. It looked like he was trying to knock some imaginary object out of your hand.
