Sydney stared at all of them before nodding once. "Okay."
When her mom was gone, Malia furrowed her brows, staring at her friends. "But it wasn't just Tracy. There were the others— the guys in the masks."
It was then Amelie's voice finally made an appearance. "What guys in masks?"
🥰
Whenever Amelie remembered that day, she hated it with a passion. Not for the reasons you might think.
Lydia was hurt. They were in danger. Malia was downstairs with some guys in masks and all Amelie could do was break down and cry. She hated herself for it. Crying should've been the last thing on her mind. She should've cleared her head and acted rationally, but all she could think of was the silver arrowhead falling out of her mouth all those months ago. All she could think of was that she was losing her best friend, just after she'd already lost one.
She resented her reaction. Stiles tried to make her feel better, say that it was normal to act like this in these situations. Panic was okay. But, she didn't feel that way.
Sitting in Biology class, Amelie couldn't stand another minute of Mrs Finch's talking. Her head was throbbing and she was so incredibly hungry, she couldn't think of anything else.
"If 99.9 percent of our DNA sequence is the same as other humans, what could account for the missing 0.1 percent difference?" Mrs Finch asked loudly. "Theo?"
"Um, nucleotides."
"That's right," She nodded before turning around. "Yes, Kira?"
"Can there be more than one species in the same DNA?" Kira asked and Amelie sighed. Time was not passing.
"No, but there can be multiple sets of DNA in the same individual. We call that a "chimera." Mrs Finch explained. "Anyone know where that term comes from? Sydney?"
Sydney's head lifted up. "Greek mythology. It's a lion with a goat coming out of its back and a tail that ends in the head of a snake."
"That's right, Sydney. Do you want to read us the full Wikipedia entry off your phone?" Mrs Finch quirked a taunting brow that had Sydney sinking into her seat. "But, that does get us into the next topic of mutation. As you know from the reading, DNA is a fragile molecule. Isn't it, Scott? Or, did you miss last night's assigned reading?"
Scott smiled sheepishly, "...Kind of."
"Kind of, or yes?"
"Mostly yes..."
"Well, then thank you for another helpful transition in topic..." She trailed off. "Drop forms. All those now acutely aware that they do not belong in this class, you should fill one out. The rest will be on my desk."
What a bitch.
🥰
"Did you get in to see Lydia?" Scott asked out of nowhere. Amelie lifted her head to see Stiles and Malia walking into the library.
"No. I tried using my free period, but she's still in the ICU," Stiles shook his head. "And no one outside family is allowed in."
"We got one thing," Malia added with a shrug as she slammed a huge book onto the table between them. The Bestiary. She remembered Chris talking about this once.
"Anything in here about half-Werewolves, half-Kanimas?" Kira asked as she watched them flip through the pages.
"The Chimera..." Amelie muttered.
