He wouldn't show himself as he didn't plan on stopping his attempt to get back to his dad, but if the person knew his name, it was someone from the 4077th and that person must be near the road.
He moved forward, slow and steady making almost no sound, and followed the direction of where the sound was coming from, what slowly started to sound like Colonel Potter.
*BANG*
The loud explosion shook the ground and Chris grabbed hold of the nearest tree to keep himself from falling. He was so scared right now, that it took all his effort to not run blindly in the direction his dad should be. There were enemy soldiers everywhere and that would be a fatal mistake. A running target would be shot without question.
He heard the Colonel from far away cursing, Sophie sounded terribly upset as well, he heard her neigh wildly and heard the sound of panicked hoofs stepping in circles.
Chris still felt like his dad was hurt or dying at the moment, it was probably just his fears that made him feel that way, but he needed to be sure. Otherwise, he would've jumped at the chance to go with the Colonel. He hated bombs and was terrified right now, he couldn't stop shaking.
Potter called again but got interrupted by a loud explosion, this one was more near the Colonel than Chris. After the silence returned and the shaking of the ground stopped, Chris heard Sophie's hoofs on the dirt road, she was galloping very fast in the direction from where they came.
Chris followed the sound with wide eyes, now he knew clearly which way he should go. He hoped the Colonel was on that horse, and not alone somewhere on the road.
The small boy almost forgot to breathe as finally, the road came into view. He stayed in the bushes hidden from anyone as he looked left and right, but no one was out there, so the Colonel must be okay. He at least hoped the man was, it was his fault the man was there in the first place. On a subconscious level, he knew this was a stupid and dangerous choice he made, but his panic made it difficult to think, he just knew he needed his dad, and he refused to leave the man, especially when there was danger.
With the road on his right, he finally knew how to get back, but now he hoped he would make it before it got dark. Which judging by the sun would be in an hour, maybe an hour and a half.
Chris froze at the spot, he heard something. He quickly ducked behind an overhanging tree. He waited and listened closely to what he thought were Koreans speaking to each other. The boy's breath sped up a little, but he managed to keep his control. He needed to get back as fast as possible, and as quiet as possible, without being seen.
After he waited for a while the voices drifted off, now they sounded far enough for Chris to be able to keep walking by unnoticed, so he slowly made his way forwards again, trying to be as quiet as possible.
The voices sounded behind him now, and they got further and further away, and he slowly released a deep breath. He couldn't stop his trembling, and right now he acted more out of intuition than common sense, but he managed to stay hidden.
Christopher crept slowly through the foliage, he was so tired and he wasn't near anything he even remotely recognized. Not that he was seeing much, the sun was down now and everything was pitch black. Which made this so much more difficult, and a lot scarier.
He is still following the road and once in a while he sneaks on it to feel the tire tracks, they were still there so he hoped he was walking in the right direction. He felt like he needed to hurry, the most awful thought came into his mind. Telling him Hawkeye was dead by now, dead or captured. But from experience, he knew that he needed to do this carefully and take his time.
