Chapter Fifty: Curses

Start from the beginning

"It's fine," he insisted. "I'm fine."

"If you say so. But if I find out that you had another vision and you didn't tell me—"

"I will, I promise. Now, you were saying something?"

Draco smirked. "Sometimes I worry that you're more worried about this than your actual exams."

"Shut up, Draco," Harry quipped, rolling his eyes.

Surprisingly, there wasn't much studying for their other exams done that night, either.

In the charms practical exam, Draco was in the middle of levitating a wineglass when he glanced over to see Harry, who was smiling at him. Thankfully, he didn't drop the wineglass, but it was a close call, and he used a surge of inspiration to make the delicate piece spin in the air. Draco left that exam feeling rather proud of himself, and so did Harry, who said it went better than the test part of charms.

It was nice that OWLs mixed every house together for the exams so he could see everyone he knew at once. Ron still didn't...like him, per se. But he was a lot more lenient, and they actually played a fun game of chess together. (Draco may or may not have attempted to flip the board when he lost, only to realise it was magically stuck to the table. Ron wouldn't stop laughing at him.)

Luna was worried about his hand, and she asked him what it meant. Draco found that he couldn't give her an answer.

"I don't know," he had whispered, and Luna in turn held his other hand in comfort.

"It'll be fine, Draco. The Nargles will get her soon."

Draco had, admittedly, felt loads better after that comment.

The rest of his exams were similar to the first, Draco shaking with nerves before he entered and leaving the room confident but worried over little details that he knew he had missed. The only interesting part of the exam week was the talk about Umbridge ordering the Aurors to take Hagrid away, and Hagrid overpowering them all and running off into the forest, leaving McGonagall stunned on the grass and worried students in their wake.

Hatred for Umbridge seemed to only increase tenfold.

And then everything went wrong.

Draco should have known that nothing good could come out of History of Magic.

He instantly knew something wasn't right when Harry began screaming in the middle of the exam, but it was worse that Draco couldn't do much to help since students usually weren't allowed to leave so early. Harry clearly did not look okay, and Draco was positive from the crazed look on his face that something was wrong.

But Draco for the life of him couldn't figure out what it was.

Hermione, Ron, Draco, and even Neville all shared looks with each other. If they would come together to help Draco when they noticed something was wrong, Draco would come together with everyone else to make sure Harry was fine.

He finished off the rest of the questions on the exam in a rushed panic, not really paying attention to the words he was placing on the parchment, and the time ticked on painfully slow, each second mocking him.

Finally, when he finished the exam in what he knew was his worst performance yet, the students ambled out of the room, chatting about Harry Potter and his screaming bout.

Draco converged with Hermione and Ron the moment they left the hall.

"What happened," he asked, worry lacing his voice in sparks.
