Chapter 34 - Ni kar'tayl gai sa'ner

Jesse's eyes went wide and a frown formed like rapid dark clouds covering the sky. Balling his fists up he spoke through gritted teeth,

"And you decided to let Fives win?!"

Rex straightened his back and again showed the authority of his role as Captain over them. He clearly stated, voice certain but not overly to make him abuse his commanding position,

"I didn't know who had betted on what, Jesse. Matter of fact, I had hoped that you would win."

Jesse relaxed and a side nod of his head, palms held out in surrender marked that he understood and backed off. Fives on the other hand was offended,

"Really, vod? I feel even more betrayed now. First (Y/N) gangs up with Echo against me and now you, Captain? Unbelievable."

I bit my lip to not laugh as Jesse snickered. Even Rex let out a humoured chuckle before patting his shoulder,

"Come on, ner vod. You still did win a few credits, it's not all bad."

Fives couldn't help the satisfied smile slowly blooming on his face as he toyed with the credits in his hand. Echo nudged him and Fives grumbled,

"Do I have to?"

"A deals a deal. Pay up."

Jesse, me and Rex all shared confused looks as Fives handed over half of what he had won to Echo who smirked,

"Pleasure doing business with you, vod."

"I hate you."

"No you don't."

As Fives turned into a dissatisfied child, Echo pocketed his credits and noticed the three of us looking expectantly at him,

"Wha- oh, right. When Fives told me he planned on making a bet with Jesse about you two, I made sure that he would bet less days than Jesse. Since I knew it wasn't long before you two would make it obvious, I also made a deal with Fives that if he won, well then I would get half the winnings. Simple."

"Oh, like you called me simple earlier, Echo?"

"Exactly."

"See why we call you Echo now?"

Echo couldn't wipe his beaming smile off his face and as Jesse opened his mouth to intervene before anything escalated, he was cut off by a voice speaking up behind us.

"Check it out, the little girly girl is clinging to the poor clone. Aw, she wouldn't last one day alone without the Captain here to entertain her. Can't blame her though, the clones are good play toys, that's why they're made after all."

My jaw locked and my entire body stiffened. Whoever that was better start praying for their life. Along with Rex and the other guys, we turned to see two non-clone mechanics leaning against the wall besides each other, snickering at me. One was a sullustan with a green leather headgear, and the other was a pantoran. Both were wearing the standard grey mechanics overall, the pantoran with his collar popped like an extinct animal trying to attract females. I knew the sullustan as Kanjib and the pantoran as Nikolaia. Both were decent mechanics, but kriff that Nikolaia was a pain in the ass. He was always quick to judge and throw comments at others. Kanjib was usually really kind and gentle, but since he had been "rejected" by others that didn't want to hang out with him, he had begun following Nikolaia around. He was the closest thing to a friend. Observing the two, the arm around me gripped the fabric of my shirt. Even the smug smiles of two who thought nothing further than the tip of their noses was enough to have a small, yet steady, river of aggravation run along my arms.
