Madisyn never thought she'd be without both her parents, but with Jay back in the Army. Her and Hailey have to figure out a whole new dynamic.

"I'll see you after class," Abby laughed, going into one room while Maddy continued down the hallway.
She was still insecure about the scar that could be seen with anything she wore.
People stared.
People stared even when they knew that Maddy saw them staring. She saw the whispering, sometimes laughing, and instantly got uncomfortable in her own skin. She got to her class as fast as she could, hiding in the back as she pulled out her phone.

Maddy got up and asked to use the bathroom before texting her mom that she was there and soon enough, Hailey's face filled her phone screen.
"Mama,"
"What's going on?"
"I just want to come home,"
"Maddy," Hailey sighed sadly, "I know it's gonna be rough but you can do this sweetie. No matter what anyone says, you're a beautiful girl,"
"It's just this stupid scar," Maddy sighed, looking down at it as best as she could.
"It's only that honey. A car. It didn't change you or your personality,"
"Okay," she nodded, "I love you,"
"I love you too," Hailey smiled, "We'll go get dinner tonight. You pick,"
"Sounds good,"
"I'll pick you up at 3,"
"Thanks, mom," She smiled, standing up from the bathroom floor.
They both said their goodbyes before Maddy headed back to class.

Hailey came back out of the break room and went back to her computer but was obviously distracted.
"You good?" Kevin asked, noticing as he went to tape something to the board.
"Yeah, just Maddy. There's still some insecurity about her scar and some kids were staring," She sighed.
"Kids are mean," He said, "But Maddy is tough, she'll be okay,"
"Thanks, Kev,"
They both turned back to their work but Hailey's mind was focused on her daughter. She watched the clock until it hit 2:45 and she was able to go to Maddy's school and pick up her daughter.
