Chapter 2: I Don't Work For Toons!

Start from the beginning

(Y/n) rolled her eyes at her uncle and walked over to the trash can to fish the bills out, and then headed inside the office.

...

Eddie hopped up the stairs to the main area of the building and sat himself down at the bar between two other guys, and noticed someone with their head on a table.

"What's with Earl?" Eddie asked the guy next to him who had a notepad around his neck.

The man wrote something in the notepad and showed it to Eddie.

"Laid off?" Eddie read in surprise.

"A new outfit bought the Red Car. Some big company called Cloverleaf." Another guy chimed in.

"No kiddin'. They bought the Red Car?"

"Yeah. Put the poor guy on two weeks' notice. Cutbacks, they said."

Eddie picked up a shot of booze and raised it to Earl. "Oh well, Earl. Hears to the pencil pushers. May they all get lead poisoning, eh?"

Eddie went to take a sip, but a red fingernailed hand covered the top of his glass. Eddie looked up to see a woman with black hair wearing a black dress with tiny yellow polka dots, and sunflower earrings. She was looking at him angrily.

"Tomorrow's Friday, Eddie. You know what happens here on Friday?" She asked.

"Fish special?"

"My boss checks the books on Friday. And if I don't have that money I gave you back in the till, I'm gonna lose my job." She hissed.

"Don't bust a button Delores. You've only got one left." Eddie replied, and handed the check to her.

"Fifty bucks?"

Eddie smiled and nodded. "Yeah."

"Where's the rest?" She demanded.

"Well, it's only a snoop job away. Have you got that camera of yours? Mines in the shop."

"Wouldn't be the pawn shop by any chance would it?" Delores huffed.

"Aw come on Delores. You need the other fifty bucks, I need the camera."

Delores silently grabbed the camera and put it on the table.

"Any film in there?"

"Should be. I haven't had that roll developed since our trip to Catalina. That sure was a long time ago."

"Yeah, that was a long time ago. We'll have to do that again sometime."

Delores rolled her eyes. "Yeah, sure Eddie."

Just then, a street car rode by, causing the place to shake, and Delores put her hand on the dishes to keep them from falling over.

She picked up the check. "Paper any good?"

"Just check the scrawl."

"R.K. Maroon? As in Maroon Cartoons?" She asked.

"Maroon Cartoons?" A new voice chimed in. "Hey, so who's your client, Mr. Detective To The Stars? Chilly Willy? Or Screwy Squirrel?"

"What do you want to drink?" Delores asked him.

"I'll take a beer, doll." The man said as he sat down next to Eddie. "So what happened huh? Someone kidnap Dinky Doodle?" He mocked.

"Cut it out, Angelo." Delores warned.

"Wait a minute, wait a minute, I know. You're working for Little Bo Peep. She's lost her sheep and you're gonna help her find them Eh?" He wheezed.

Eddie was getting more and more annoyed by the minute, but he tried to keep it together.

"Hey Valiant, where's your little Toon niece? I got a job she can take care of." Angelo hinted, with a laugh.

That was the last straw for Eddie. He kicked out Angelo's chair from underneath him, causing Angelo to fall and hit his chin on the bar. Eddie stood up and grabbed Angelo's face.

"Get this straight, meatball. I don't work for Toons, and don't you ever...talk about my niece like that again." Eddie grabbed an egg and shoved it in his mouth, before he turned and stormed out of the bar.

Angelo stood up and Delores came up next to him.

"So what's his problem?" Angelo stupidly asked.

"A Toon killed his brother. (Y/n)'s adopted father." Delores revealed.

Angelo and the other guys at the bar looked at her in shock.

"Dropped a piano on his head."

...

Eddie came back to the office and found (Y/n) sitting at his desk reading a book. She looked up when she saw him come in.

Eddie turned to her and sighed loudly. "Alright, you can come on the job."

She stood up in excitement. "Really?!" She squealed.

"Yes. But, you stay with me at all times! I better not see you leave my sight, understood?"

(Y/n) nodded vigorously, and ran around the desk and hugged him. "Thank Uncle Eddie." Eddie hugged her back and a small smile crept onto his face.

(Y/n) pulled away, and clasped her hands together. "Ooh! I gotta go figure out what to wear."

And with that, she rushed off, leaving Eddie alone in his office, regretting his decision.
