Chapter 38: The Question

Start from the beginning

Whilst you browsed the aisles, wearing a hoodie and sunglasses for protection, you felt a buzz in your pocket, so you pulled out your phone, to see who'd texted you. To nobody's surprise, it was Gerard.

Gee:
Hey! Can I
come around
tonight?

You:
Sure
Good timing
actually I'm
shopping so
do you want
anything for
dinner?

Gee:
You ;)

You:
I will block
you

You couldn't help but snort slightly, at the goofy conversation, as you continued to stock up on goods. Your boyfriend was such a goddamn dork, and yet you really couldn't picture yourself with anyone else; it was funny how at first you'd tried so vehemently hard to avoid anything romantic, and yet here you were, and nothing all that terrible had happened. It did really seem like you'd changed both of each other's lives for the better.

That was a very nice thought, actually, quite reassuring.

Though, sometimes it was scary how much you felt for Gerard. You'd never been so whipped for anyone in your life, and even being in a relationship with him hadn't doused the flames, in fact it could be argued it had made them worse. You had no idea how you could ever live without him now, he made you far too happy for words, it was almost pathetic just how reliant you were on him.

You loved him so much. You really, honestly did.

You stopped, in the middle of the pavement, bag of shopping in hand, nervously considering what you were about to do next. Well, one life, one love, right? It worked, right? Maybe the phone call with Harvey had spurred on this impulsiveness, but maybe that was a good thing.

You pulled your device out again, and this time went to Frank's contact, whilst beginning to walk again, but this time towards a row of shops on the other side of the street. "Hey, Frank, sorry to bother you — uh, do you know what Gerard's ring size is?"

-

You waited for months; you procrastinated, panicked and pondered until steadfast October arrived, and while you were mid-tour, you resolved to finally do it. It took you a long fucking time to get the nerve.

Gerard had insisted on travelling with you for the duration anyway, wanting to be close to you. You were in London, on a cold Tuesday evening, and as you were performing, listening to the roar of the crowd, it sort of inspired you, you could say. A bit of motivation, call it that if you will.

When you got off the platform, and stumbled back through the corridors with Harvey, who was now married after a small ceremony in Haverhill, Massachusetts, thoroughly spent from singing your ass off, there was only one thing really on your mind — to do it now. If you didn't do it now, you'd never do it, and that was the worst case scenario imaginable.

The ring would burn a hole through your head if you thought about it for too long anyway.

"Hey, are you okay? You're sweating buckets," Harvey observed, watching as you slumped down in the seat backstage.

"Yup," you croaked out, running a hand through your hair. "Yeah, I'm good. Uh, Gerard's not here yet, right?" you asked weakly.

"No, he said he was going to the toilet," your manager replied, "he'll probably be here soon though. Why?"

"Uh, I," you grabbed your bag off the floor, and dug through it, and found the little black box at the bottom of it, "I just need to talk to him about something important."

"Oh, alright," Harvey raised an eyebrow, backing away towards the door. "Call me if you need anything, alright?"

"Uh huh," you nodded stiffly as he left; you had a suspicion he knew what was going on, and that thought made you feel even more nervous. What if it was obvious? You didn't want Gerard to turn up and then just... turn you down flat, before you'd even, y'know—
