"I'll go put him down, let you get on" Steve offers holding his arms out.
"Few more minutes," you say stepping back slightly not wanting to let JJ go just yet.
Steve smiles waiting until you were ready. Eventually, you had to get on and make the icing for the cake so you pass a sleeping JJ over to Steve so he can put him down for his nap.
That evening after putting JJ down for the night you and Steve sat on the balcony watching the sunset. You sighed wine glass in hand as you watched the wildlife on the grasslands. You spot a herd of elephants, at the centre of which stood a tiny calf. It couldn't have been more than a couple of months old and you remember when JJ was that age. Wishing he still was that age.
"Hey what's wrong?" Steve asks gently, reaching over to rest his hand on your arm.
You pull yourself from your thoughts wiping away the stray tear that you hadn't realised you'd shed. You force a small smile as you look over at him.
"Nothing I'm fine," you say smiling slightly.
"Doll, I love you, but you're lying," Steve says making you sigh and shake your head.
"I don't know, I guess I'm just sad at how quickly the past year has gone, next thing I'll know he'll be 18 and leaving home," you tell him.
"I love seeing him grow and flourish into his own little person but-" you sigh shaking your head.
"But you wish it just wasn't happening so fast" Steve finishes for you.
"Exactly" you sigh.
"I don't like it either, I miss when he was tiny and it was like he could fit in just one hand," Steve says holding up his hand.
"But I absolutely love seeing him crawling around the apartment at breakneck speeds, pulling those funny faces when he tries something he doesn't like" Steve continues making you chuckle remembering the time you gave him plum purée.
"Because his personality is shining through and it's only getting brighter day by day, and yes we'll miss him being that tiny newborn but there are so many exciting things on the horizon, just remember how amazing it was when he said his first word? There's so much more to come, like his first steps, first day at school, first crush, first beer" Steve smiles taking your hand squeezing it, and rubbing his thumb over your skin.
"He won't need me though" you sigh shaking your head.
"Yes he will, he will always need his mom, I have no doubt that when he's twenty-something he'll be calling you asking if you could book his dentist appointment," Steve says making you laugh gently.
"Like how I book yours?" You say with a small smirk.
"Yes exactly like that and I'm a hundred years old" Steve laughs.
"See what I mean, us Rogers boys need the women in our lives to keep our heads on straight" he smiles squeezing your hand.
"You would be a mess" you chuckle weakly making Steve laugh.
"Exactly so thank god me and JJ have you because I don't know what we'd do without you" Steve smiles.
"Thanks Steve, I don't know what I'd do without you" you smile.
"C'mere," Steve says holding his arms you.
You smile standing up and moving to sit sideways on his lap. He wraps his arms around you tightly resting his forehead against yours. You smile placing your hand over his heart, feeling the relaxing rhythm.
"I love you Stevie" you whisper.
"I love you too princess" Steve smiles pecking your lips.
