Steve slowly and quietly walked through the apartment, keeping his eyes on the floor. He couldn't bare seeing anything that reminded him of you. However when he stepped inside the bedroom he couldn't help but glance over at the bed expecting to see you there, but there was nothing, just empty space.
He looked away before he could break down again, rushing into the bathroom shutting the door behind him and leaning against it. He pinched the bridge of his nose, screwing his eyes shut as he tried to stop the onslaught of emotions. He quickly turned on the shower, not bothering to adjust the temperature, stripping off his combat suit and stepping inside the shower. The hot water scolded his skin, the cuts he had from the battle stinging as the water ran over them. But the pain was nothing compared to the stabbing sensation in his chest.
As he started the clean off the dirt and grime from the battle he caught sight of your shampoo. Without thinking he grabbed it, flipping the cap and sniffing it. He instantly regretted it when he was hit with your familiar and comforting scent. His shoulders dropped and he had to brace himself against the wall as he broke down, his tears washing away down the plug hole with everything else.
He only got out of the shower when he heard the faint cries of JJ, quickly drying off and getting dressed before making his way into the nursery. JJ was stood up in his crib, gripping onto the sides and stomping his feet in frustration.
"Hey, it's okay c'mere" Steve sighed as he picked JJ up.
"Are you hungry? Want some breakfast?" Steve asks as he walks into the kitchen, earning a tiny nod from JJ.
Steve set JJ down in his chair before quickly making up his breakfast, as JJ started to eat, he made himself a coffee before sitting tiredly down in front of JJ. As he watched his son eat he sighed falling into a dazed state, nothing that had happened in the past 24 hours seemed right. It felt like a horrid nightmare that he just wanted to wake up from.
"Hey, I knocked a couple of times but you didn't respond so I let myself in, how are you?" Nat says walking into the kitchen.
Steve just hums while JJ babbles once he spots Nat.
"We still trying to work out who is still around, but Rhodey suggested that we head back to the compound, all of us," Nat tells him as she sits down.
"Make use of FRIDAY to find out who's missing, hopefully we can find Tony and the others too" she adds, Steve nodding along.
"When do we go?" Steve asks after a moment.
"We can start sending people back to the compound today, but we know that you have more to organise so a couple of us can hang back to help" Nat explains nodding over to JJ.
"Thanks Nat, we can probably be ready to go by tomorrow morning" Steve sighs nodding his head slowly.
"Take as long as you need Steve, don't feel like you need to rush," Nat tells him putting a hand on his arm.
"Honestly I don't think I can stay here, everything screams Y/N" Steve admits shaking his head, his voice catching.
"I understand, but look what Thanos did can be undone, there must be some way to, we'll get her back I promise," Nat says squeezing his hand, Steve forces a small smile hoping what Nat was saying was true.
"Thanks Nat," he says quietly.
"Dada!" JJ calls out slapping the tray in front of him.
Steve and Nat look back over at him in surprise, Steve started to well up, but he wasn't sure if he should be happy or sad. This was the first time JJ had called him Dada, but you weren't here to witness it.
