I nodded at Jih that I was
ready to go.He grinned and gave me a fist bump that I returned while adrenaline pumped through me, giving me a burst of excitement.
We walked silently to the cold interrogation room, both obviously psyching ourselves up.
We didn't need to plan on our way because we'd been working together just long enough to know the play we were going
to make. And Jih knew me and this case well enough to know that I couldn't leave that room without a confession. Not this time.
Not this case.
Even after being a detective for two years, it gave me a bit of a shock when I walked into the interrogation room and saw the face I had studied so carefully
for so many hours on a piece of paper, here in living color but there he sat, the hitman who
had killed hobi's father. He looked ordinary to the point of being bland but I guessed
that helped him work.He wore his hair parted to the side like a bible salesman and
his brown eyes were warm and crinkled at the edges as he smiled at us when we entered the room. The motherfucker was downright cheerful and it made me want
to do unprofessional things,
like plant my fist in his face, especially after I'd watched
hobi go into a dark spiral of depression.Jih laid his hand on my arm as he walked around to a seat, cautioning me silently to calm myself as my temper rose.
He was right, Miguel wasn't
our guy, not really. He was only the tool of the murder, We wanted so much more than this pissant killer.
We wanted the big fish, his
boss Lee Jiwoo. To get him, we were going to have to play dirty.
We only had a few more hours
in which we were legally
allowed to hold Miguel.Good cop had left the building.
I was playing for keeps.
"Listen, Miguel."
"I'm done negotiating with
you." I began.By the smirk on his face he thought that I was bluffing.
He was about to see how
serious I could get."You have a wife, don't you?"
"Two kids?" I asked.
"Two girls, wasn't it?"
Miguel's face twitched, just slightly but enough for me to know he was listening.
He cocked his head a bit as he studied me, like he was sizing me up and deciding what I
might know."How old are they now?"
"Leave my family out of this."
he snapped before tightening
his lips as if chastising himself
for letting those words out.I sat down in my cold metal chair, letting the legs scrape across the floor as I clucked my tongue and smiled at him, keeping my smile friendly enough to set him off guard, I hoped.
I was pretty fucking mad right now, so who knew what I really looked like.
"I wish I could keep your family out of this, Miguel, I really do but that choice is out of my hands."
I shrugged and grinned.
"You see, Jiwoo has already
brought your family into this."Miguel lunged at me.
Maybe I'm a big alpha but I still flinched as the noise and clang
of metal on metal banged
around the room.I scooted back a few inches
but the cuffs locking him to
the table held.Jih sat back in his chair, knowing I was leading this particular interrogation and that I would signal him if I needed backup.
He widened his eyes my direction, urging me to hurry
the fuck up while I had Miguel off-kilter.My heart pounded so hard I
was surprised I couldn't taste
it in the back of my throat."Miguel, Miguel." I said, clicking my tongue against the roof of
my mouth as if I was scolding
a child."Don't you know the man you were working for at all?"
"Jiwoo has been waiting for
you to snitch since you were brought in."Miguel made a small, deep noise in the back of his throat, half agreement, half terror.
"With eyes on your family and Jiwoo reputation for what he does to punish snitches, I'd be less worried about me and more fucking worried about the man you are protecting, Miguel."
"If I had two little girls, I'd be worried about bad things happening to them."
Miguel thumped back into his metal chair, the legs whining under the weight of his panic.
He wasn't ready to look at me yet, his eyes flaring across the room, trying to find a solution that didn't involve me, the
man who had put him here.He yanked at his hands again, almost as if he really thought
he might have more than a snowball's chance in hell of Houdini-ing his way out of here.
