Still standing in the doorway, you surveyed the room, searching for the front desk as Jenna had mentioned. Finally, your eyes settled on it, and you made your way over. The person behind the desk glanced up, their short ginger hair and heavily lined eyes giving them a distinct grunge style. It didn't seem to suit their personality.
"Can I help you?" they asked, their tone sweet but tinged with a hint of cheerfulness that was hard to miss.
"Oh Yeah, I'm Y/N. We spoke on the phone yesterday. You said you could give me an interview?" you explained, hoping they remembered your conversation.
Recognition flickered across their face, and they exclaimed, "Ohh, hey Y/N. So, you'll want to head down the hall, turn right, and go into the first office..." They paused, then added, "You know what, I'll just walk you." Jenna offered, her voice carrying a friendly tone. As you stumbled over your words, she took your hand and guided you toward a dimly lit hallway.
The sounds of laugher and music died down the further you got from the main room as you followed her down the crowded hallway.
"You didn't think I would be the one to give you an interview, right?" Jenna asked with a playful smirk. Embarrassed, you briefly looked away before responding.
"Uh, well no but...who is?" you asked hesitantly.
"Ah, Henry Emily, he's one of our bosses," she replied, giving you a small insight.
"Oh, good to know," you said, appreciating the information.
"Well, it's not like you're gonna really have to do much of an interview... Don't tell anyone I told you this, but we're really low on staff," Jenna whispered, her voice tinged with concern. Walking down the long dim hallway,
Nodding, you and Jenna continued until you reached a door with a golden plate engraved with the name
"Henry Emily"
Jenna knocked on the door, and you took a step back, waiting for a response. From inside the room, a voice called out,
"Come in, it's not locked."
Jenna opened the door, and you followed her inside. Henry Emily looked up from his papers, offering a warm smile as he addressed you.
"So, you're Y/N," he said, confirming your identity. You returned the smile, stepping closer as he invited you to sit in the chair across his desk. You felt a wave of awkwardness wash over you.
"I'm guessing you're Mr. Emily?" You recalled the metal plate on the door. He shook his head.
"Mr. Emily makes me sound old," he smiled "call me Henry"
You nodded and straightened yourself in your chair.
"So, Y/N, why did you choose to work here? Why do you want to work here out of all places?" He started the conversation.
You considered his question for a moment. "Well, I think it would be a good fit for me personally. I love kids," you answered, though you knew it was a lie... it wouldn't have helped to say you only wanted to get a job here to get your mother off your back.
"Hmm," Henry murmured, jotting down notes on his paper. Silence hung in the air as you nervously fiddled with your hands.
Finally, he sighed. "Listen, we're really short-staffed right now. I'm gonna leave you here to fill out some paperwork but the probability of you getting this job is extremely high," he said, looking up at you.
You couldn't help but be taken aback by the suddenness of the offer. "Oh, okay," you replied, attempting to conceal your enthusiasm.
He pulled out a large folder and handed it to you, you flipped through the folder, skimming lightly which might not have been the best idea but you were desperate. You signed where you needed to and handed the folder back to him.
"So, when are you ready to start working?" Henry inquired.
"Oh...tomorrow is good?" you answered, feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty.
"Okay, well, you already have the company phone number, and we have your information, so... welcome to the team," Henry chuckled, giving you a sense of relief.
"Thank you!" you exclaimed gratefully as you stood up and headed for the door. Closing it behind you, you released a long sigh of relief.
That was surprisingly easier than I thought. Maybe too easy, you thought, contemplating the swift turn of events. Walking back through the hallway, you returned to the main room where Jenna awaited, engrossed in her phone. As soon as she spotted you, she bolted up, eager for news.
"Y/N! That wasn't very long," she teased. "Did you get the job?"
"Actually, surprisingly, yes!" you announced, approaching her with a smile.
"Aa! Yes! Finally, a normal co-worker!" Jenna exclaimed, expressing her joy. You couldn't help but wonder about the others.
"How many weird people are there here?" you wondered aloud.
"What do you mean?" Jenna asked curiously.
"Oh, there's the 'normal' ones; me and Rose, obviously, then the janitor, and..." Jenna paused for dramatic effect. "Well, then there's Mr. Afton. He's our other boss, and also sort of a creepy guy. I don't know, something's off about him," she explained.
That's the other guys name...he can't be that bad.
"Ohh. Well, I'll see you tomorrow? I gotta go," you said, ready to leave.
"Alright, Y/N! Bye!" Jenna waved.
"Bye!" you replied. You exited the building, and as the daylight waned, you got into your car and drove home. opening the door, your sister eagerly ran up to you.
"Hey Y/N" she greeted me, not paying me much attention.
"Hey," you dropped your bag by the front door and went to sit down on the couch when your mother walked in the room.
"Oh- you're back." She sat down next to you.
"Mhm," you nodded and sat back a little bit, you thought about telling her about your new job, she would probably be happy with you but you didn't want to get her hopes up...
"okay, I hope you had fun."
"Thanks," you smiled.
After dinner, you headed upstairs to your room, took a shower, got dressed, brushed your teeth, and climbed into bed. Exhaustion weighed heavily upon you. You reflected,
Woah, this might be the most eventful day I've had in literally years. I got a new friend, a new job, and I'm actually happy about it.
Wanting to revel in your accomplishments a bit longer, you soon realized how tired you were. It was only 7:00 pm, but with an early morning shift starting at 8:00 am, you needed to get as much sleep as possible. You settled down, quickly succumbing to sleep.
As you drifted off, you couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment.
