Kyle felt like an impatient toddler waiting for his mother to come read him a bedtime story. He wanted nothing more than to hear Stan's voice, for them to talk. But they both just keep staring at those damn menus.

Kyle's eyes looked away from his menu and up at the black haired boy across the table from him. He was nervous, Kyle could tell by the way he was bouncing his leg under the table, and how he was biting his lip.

"Dude calm down, it's just me." Kyle said, and this time Stan's eyes looked up at him.

Stan felt sick. All the butterflies he had in his stomach began to bundle up like a tornado. And they were trying to flutter away, to come out of his mouth and onto the table. What Kyle hadn't realized was just what he said. Stan couldn't calm down, not when Kyle was looking at him with so much love in his eyes. Not when he was so close he could touch him, but also so far. Their hearts felt like they were a thousand miles away from each other.

Stan opened his mouth to respond, but before he could the lady from earlier came back, asking if they were ready to order.

Stan wasn't, but at this point in time he'd rather talk to this lady than Kyle. So he just named off the dish he had read around ten times over because it was still fresh in his memory.

Kyle noticeably sighed, but ordered anyway. He was really excited when he saw Stan open his mouth, he thought that maybe he would talk to him. But no, awkwardness is still lingering in the air.

And even after the lady left a second time, Stan still wouldn't talk.

They ate their food together, but not truly together. They never shared another word.

They were walking home in silence when Kyle decided that he'd finally had enough. "What is going on with you, Stan?" He asked, turning his attention to the other who refused to make eye contact with him.

"Nothing," he mumbled, but Kyle wasn't having any of that bullshit.

"There's obviously something! You won't talk to me, and Hell you won't even look at me! Did something happen? Did I do something wrong?" Kyle asked, a tear falling freely down his face.

Stan was mad at himself, of course Kyle would overthink. That's what he does. And now he's made him cry. He made the person he loves most cry.

"No, please don't cry," Stan said, reaching a hand towards Kyle's face and wiping the tears away. They had stopped walking and were now standing directly under a street light. Their eyes had finally met, making a slight smile spread across Kyle's face.

"I'm so sorry, Kyle. I didn't mean to make you feel like this was your fault. I just... I struggle being around you. You make me feel so special and loved, nobody's ever made me feel that way before. And I was too nervous to act on my emotions, because I didn't want to scare you away."

Kyle smiled up at Stan, finally getting what he wanted. Stan was talking. "It's okay, it's my fault for overthinking. All I wanted was for you to talk to me, like normal. Because even though our hearts have been shared with one another, it still feels like we're not truly together."

Stan smiled, he knew exactly what Kyle meant. So close yet so far.

"I promise I won't be awkward around you anymore," Stan decided. He still had his hand on Kyle's cheek, so he began gently caressing it. Kyle pushed his face closer to Stan's hand, loving the attention.

"Pinky promise?" Kyle asked, reaching his other hand out so Stan could intertwine their pinkys together. They had always made pinky promises, it's like a Stan and Kyle tradition. Ever since they were kids, if one of them made a promise to the other they had to seal it with a little pinky shake. With how many they've broken though, they'll be having centuries of bad luck.

Stan pinky promised, then grabbed Kyle's hand in his own when they started walking back to their houses again.

They still may not be dating, but they were closer than ever. A lesson they both learned that night was that it was important to share your feelings, even if you fear they may scare off the other. Because if the other actually does run from your feelings, then they don't deserve to be in your life in the first place.

And with this new information, Stan and Kyle would definitely be having another date soon.
