"I'm fine," he replied curtly. "Get me a black coffee. Also, inform Dr. Rahul and the two nurses to prepare for the check-up we'll leave in twenty minutes."
"Yes, sir. I'll be back with your coffee soon."
As she left, Adarsh pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to shake off the heaviness pressing on his chest.
FLASHBACK
Yashi lay on the bed, her head resting in his lap. Adarsh gently massaged her scalp, a soft smile on his face.
"Never leave me, Adarsh. I won't be able to live without you." Her voice trembled, eyes glossy with unshed tears.
His fingers froze for a second before he leaned down, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Why are you thinking such sad things, Yashi? I'm not going anywhere. You are my lifeline."
"I love you," she whispered.
"I love you too, babe."
END OF FLASHBACK
Knock, knock.
Adarsh quickly wiped away the stray tear that had escaped his eye.
"Come in."
Nurse Nae entered, placing a steaming cup of black coffee on his desk. "Sir, Dr. Ananya wants to meet you."
Adarsh's expression turned cold. "Send her in."
Moments later, a young woman entered the cabin.
Adarsh looked at her and said, "What brings you here, Ananya?"
"Adarsh," Ananya beamed. "Can't I visit my-bo- I mean, best friend?" She pouted.
He rolled his eyes. "Doctor Ananya, this is a hospital, not a public café. I'm not always free to entertain visitors."
Ananya's smile faltered. "I think you should move on, Adarsh. You can't always keep thinking about her." Her voice turned bitter. "She must be somewhere else with someone else. She's a slu-"
A loud bang echoed through the room.
Adarsh had slammed his palm against the table, his face dark with fury.
"Enough, Dr. Ananya!" His voice was lethal. "It would be best for you to leave. Right now."
Ananya flinched, eyes wide. "I-I'm sorry, Adarsh. I didn't mean-"
"Out."
She hesitated but, seeing the fire in his gaze, turned and hurried out of the room.
Adarsh exhaled sharply, his fingers tightening into fists. Why does she still affect me? He looked at his desk, where a picture of Yashi lay. His jaw clenched.
In one swift motion, he grabbed the picture and tore it apart.
"I hate you, Yashi Singh." His voice was barely above a whisper. "I hate you."
Pushing the memories aside, he got up and left his cabin, not wanting to be late for his work.
