My mother.
I walked over to the open door and stepped onto the porch. Every head turned my way, some officers gasping and my mother- well, her face twisted into murderous anger.
"ALL OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT!" She screamed, pulling against the officer.
"IM INNOCENT! THAT KID IS A SCHIZO FREAK." My mother began laughing maniacally as another officer escorted her back to a car.
I felt my heart ache - the last thing I wanted was to hear my mother yell such things at me. I shook the pain away as the chief of the department made his way over to me. I swallowed the nervousness swelling up on my throat and held my hands behind my back. His eyes squinted down at me, a hand shooting out for me to shake. I uneasily took it and sighed at his strong handshake.
"I can't believe I'm saying this but.. good work, detective." He laughed, dropping my hand.
"It must've been hard work avoiding your arrest and then finding out it wasn't you that killed him.. how did you do it?" He scoffed, crossing his arms.
"I uhm.. a friend. A friend helped me." A small smile tugged at my lips as I remembered Wally.
"Well, get this friend in touch with me! I'll give 'em one hell of a job offer. Ah, that reminds me.." he paused, scratching his beard and placing a hand on his hip.
"I wanted to promote ya! I think 'Detective' sounds better than 'Junior Detective', don't you think, kiddo?" He said, slapping a hand on my shoulder and laughing.
I felt happiness shoot through my veins, distracting me from the pain in my shoulder. I was getting promoted- I was getting promoted!! I couldn't stop the huge smile that spread across my face.
"Oh my! Yes! I mean- I think it sounds great." I giggled anxiously, tugging on my fingers.
"Let me just get you my card..." he dug a hand into his pocket and grunted. "Left it in the car, I'll be back with my number." He sighed, turning and marching slowly towards a small police car.
I glanced back toward the door. Surely nobody would care if I went back inside, right? I bit my lip and made a run for it, successfully making it inside and tripping up the stairs. I groaned as I stumbled to my room and fell onto my bed. I needed to tell Wally the good news - there was no way I could wait! I hopped up and smiled as I powered my computer on. To my surprise, Wally had been waiting for me. When the computer buzzed to life, I was immediately brought to a screen where Wally sat waiting for me.
"Wally!" I gasped out joyfully.
"Hello, Darling! Back so soon? You must've missed me so much!" Wally joked, propping his chin onto his palm.
"Of course I do, but that's not why I'm here. Something really crazy just happened!" I exclaimed, watching as Wally moved off of the couch and sat in front of his television.
"So, my mother got arrested - thank god. A- and the chief of the police department promoted me! Can you believe it?!" I squealed, my smile practically reaching my ears.
I wanted so desperately to hug him- that's when the thought hit me, I can! I excitedly threw my hands against the screen, only to grunt as my hands smacked the screen roughly.
"That's amazing, darling." Wally whispered, looking back at me somberly.
My smile faded a bit as I pressed my hand further onto the screen, my eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"Wally, what's wrong? Did I do something? Why can't I.." I choked out, frowning.
"It's.. oh dear, where do I begin." Wally said, a hand traveling to his hair and pulling.
