Chapter Three - Do distractions ever really work?

Start from the beginning

"Five more minutes," Oakley said only to be met with groans from both Kayce and Tate.

The three of them were cuddled up on the couch, Kayce's favorite movie playing on the television in front of them. Oakley was leaning against Kayce, his arm around her while Tate had his top half across Kayce's lap, and his legs thrown over Oakley's lap.

"It's a school night," Oakley reminded them both. "Tomorrow we can stay up later."

"Why's your birthday on a Thursday, Dad?" Tate asked.

"It's just how this year fell, bud," Kayce shrugged.

"Your birthday is next month, right?" Tate looked at Oakley.

"That's right," Oakley nodded. "The twentieth."

"And then mine is June," Tate nodded, and Oakley froze.

Tate's birthday was in June. They couldn't get married in June, that would take away from Tate's birthday, right? He would think they didn't care about him, wouldn't he?

"Come on buddy," Kayce pushed Tate gently off them. "Let's get you in bed."

The two of them went into the bedroom while Oakley sat on the couch for a little while.

If they couldn't get married in June, they could do May? But May can still bring snow...so July? But then there is the fourth and Oakley didn't want to be close to that. August would be too warm. And oh no, she had told Monica June. Monica knows when Tate's birthday is...she probably thinks Oakley's a terrible person now.

Oakley looked over and saw Kayce standing next to the couch, his arms crossed and looking down at her.

"You okay?" He asked softly.

"We can't get married in June," Oakley sighed.

"Why not?" Kayce asked.

"Because Tate's birthday is in June," Oakley stood up. "I can't believe I didn't think of that earlier. God...I told Monica too and she probably thinks I'm such a bitch for picking June."

"I don't see why that makes you a bitch," Kayce raised an eyebrow.

"Because that's Tate's month," Oakley said.

"Tate's birthday is on the second," Kayce said. "We just don't need to pick the second."

"I don't want him to be weirded out by it," Oakley said.

"I don't think he honestly cares," Kayce tilted his head. "Why are you thinking so hard about this?"

"I just don't want anyone to have their feelings hurt," Oakley mumbled, walking past Kayce.

She knew he didn't understand completely, but if she explained it right now, she'd start to cry either because of the stress or because of how ridiculous it would sound. Oakey wanted into the bedroom and saw Tate tucked into her side of the bed. It had become their tradition that Oakley would share Kayce's side when Tate was with them.

"Goodnight, Oaks," Tate said with a yawn.

Oakley walked over to him and sat down on the bed next to him.

"Night Tot," Oakley smiled. "Get some sleep."

Tate snuggled into the pillow while Oakley turned that light off on her side. She stood back up and walked out, shutting the door behind her.

She saw Kayce laying down on the couch, the movie turned down now. Oakley took a deep breath before walking over to look down at Kayce.

"Sorry," Oakley mumbled. "I know I just got weird."
