09| Don't Do This Alone

Start from the beginning

I turn and give her a look and she merely smiles and he does the same.

"You know Charlie, you're not so bad," I hear Sofia say to him as I walk back to the fitting room.

"You're not so bad either," he responds.

"I'll take that as a compliment," she says, "though I just gotta ask..." She pauses for a moment before saying, "Charlie is short for Charles?"

I can hear Charlie laughing. "Not at all," he says.

"Then?"

"It's like a nickname or the English version of Carlos."

"Carlos," she says like she can't believe it.

I walk out of the dressing room after that. They both turn and look at me, studying for a moment until finally Sofia stands up.

"That is the dress." Sofia says proudly. "Right Charlie?"

He looks at me but doesn't say anything.

"Charlie?" Sofia repeats and elbows him.

"Yeah, um, definitely the one," he answers and nods.

I let out a relieved sigh. "Finally," I tell them before going back to the fitting room to change back to my clothes.

When we reach the cashier I hand her the dress. As she's bagging it Charlie takes out his card.

"What are you doing?" I say.

"Buying the dress?" he replies confused.

"Uh, I can buy it."

"No, I mean its for my event and I can buy it for you."

I insert my card before Charlie has the chance to.

"Julie," he says.

"Don't worry about it," I tell him.

From the corner of my eye I see Sofia merely watching us, amused as always.

As we walk out of the store Sofia stops and says. "Well this was fun but I'm gonna let you guys go now."

"What?" I say, "but we didn't go to where you wanted yet. There's still time before-"

"No believe me today was fun enough," she says with a smile.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes," she says, "See you guys later."

"Bye," we both call out as she walks away.

After she's gone I turn to look at Charlie.

"How about some ice cream before we go?" he asks.

"Sounds good to me," I respond.

After the ice cream Charlie takes me home.

"So the event starts at six," he says when we're parked in my driveway, "I'll pick you up at 5:30, okay?"

"Okay," I tell him, "I'll see you tomorrow." I reach for the door handle.
