I hated being pregnant. I look as big as a house now.

I begrudgingly finished my shift and waited for Matthew inside the mall. We agreed to meet in the food court. The smell of all the food was making me hungry. I mindlessly scrolled through Instagram while waiting.

I smelled his cologne so I looked up to find him in front of me.

"Matthew." I looked at him with adoration.

"Jenna." He said plainly.

"Ready to shop?" I asked, getting out of my seat.

"Sure." He answered unenthusiastically.

"But first, the baby is hungry." I stood next to him and looked at his slouched figure expectantly.

He looked at me bored.

"Where to?" He asked with a detached tone.

"This pizza place looks nice." I motioned to the sit-down pizza restaurant inside the mall. I wanted us to eat together and bond.

He sluggishly followed me.

Matthew inattentively let me order whatever I wanted while he ordered nothing for himself.

"Aren't you hungry?" I asked him, while we waited for my food.

He shook his head and paid for my food.

I got my food and sat at the table he was at.

He immediately stood and moved to another table.

"Jenna, I would like to be alone." He said when I got up to follow him.

"Cool." That was all I said before sitting back down at the table. Alone.

I ate my pizza in silence while Matthew leisurely scrolled on his phone.

It was silent until I finished my food and we walked out of the pizza shop, distant.

I needed more time.

I grabbed Matthew's hand "The baby wants dessert." I pointed to the Cinnabon shop ahead.

"Lead the way." Was all he said halfheartedly.

I sneakily smiled as I guided him to the dessert shop.

I'm carrying his baby. That alone put me above Vanessa on the tier list. Game on.

Miles POV:

I was waiting at a red light after a long shift driving home when I noticed the billboard. I rubbed my eyes and blinked twice to make sure I was reading the sign and it wasn't exhaustion causing me to see things.

I just finished a shift filled with constant running back and forth, high-risk patients, and absolute chaos with only a twenty-one-minute lunch break. The intensity needed to survive residency was draining and all I needed was good rest.

My eyebrows raised when I processed the words. It was weird. I wonder if Vanessa knows about it. How would she feel if she saw it? Would she like it or would she have the sad look she had when we met? I don't think she'll like it.

Whatever this is, she shouldn't have to deal with this.

I was surprised to see her again at the CPR Training course I voluntarily teach. She looked so different from the first time we met. She no longer looked forlorn and carried a smooth confidence in her shoulders and had a peaceful aura around her. It complimented her along with the nose piercing. I wasn't trying to come across as weird when I invited her to the bookstore, I was merely trying to get to know her and bond over the book she was reading. No romantic feelings are involved.
