However, the second his hand made contact with Kaeya's shoulder, Diluc froze! Kaeya was so motionless it was scary. His body felt so still. It was like he was merely a statue rather than a human being. There was no movement... nothing; not even a simple vibration from a heartbeat or flutter of air from his breathing. The aura around him was wholly lifeless. Up close Diluc could see how pale the captain was; put him up to a foggy glass and they looked almost like mirror replicas. His skin was incredibly sickly pale and his forehead was just covered in sweat. If Diluc didn't know any better, he'd think Kaeya had just come back from war compared to the reality he was getting high on booze. His brother had certainly had a drink or two tonight but there wasn't enough alcohol consumed to leave him like this. Kaeya was perfectly fine when he walked in at the beginning of the night; how in Tyvet  had he gone from perfectly healthy to being on death's door in one night. Archons! On death's door, simply thinking about that made Diluc's heart drop. What if Kaeya was dead?

"Kaeya! Wake up Kaeya, this isn't funny. Kaeya!" Diluc hysterically screamed, shaking his brother's shoulder like a maniac.

In a desperate attempt to push the other into consciousness, he attempted to slap the knight awake, but when he was about to make contact his hand stilled. Looking at that pitiful face, Diluc couldn't bring himself to hit it... and thank tyvet for that, because it quickly snapped the vigilante back to his senses. Instead of acting like a lunatic who had a few screws loose, Diluc had finally decided to act like any other sensible human being and went to check his brother for a pulse before assuming the worst. He hadn't even confirmed if Kaeya was even dead to begin with. There's no use panicking when all hope is not lost. If there was even the faintest chance that Kaeya was still alive, Diluc needed to be in his right mind to be able to act. Therefore, as he carefully took the captain's wrist and checked for a pulse, the redhead did his best to steady his nerves. It wasn't an easy task when every inch of himself wanted to go into panic overdrive but Diluc was doing his best to stay in control of his body and force his anxiety to follow his commands. With confidant precision, Diluc put his fingers to Kaeya's wrist and focused on sensing any type of beat. He closed his eyes, taking another deep breath to calm himself, and  turned all his attention to the wrist in his hand, honing his senses on feeling any sign of life, patiently waiting. When at last he felt the vein throb back, his body visibly relaxed and unwillingly let out a sigh of relief. Kaeya was alive... but they weren't out of the woods yet.

With each beat, the pulse got a bit weaker and it wouldn't be long till that pulse became nonexistent. However, Diluc wasn't going to let things get that far. Without a moment of hesitation, the redhead hoisted the other up into his arms and gently carried him bridal style out the door. Diluc had a firm grip on his brother and moved with a quick pace but at the same time held Kaeya with such care, that it would be absurd to think he ever tried to take the other's life in the past. Kaeya was dying and Diluc would scoff at any person who didn't think he'd handle him with the utmost care. Truthfully, his brother didn't have to be dying for Diluc to want to handle him with care and love. This was his baby brother they were talking about; they may not be on the best of terms at this current moment in time, but Diluc still cared, and as he carried Kaeya, almost running, towards the cathedral, Diluc realised it was about time he started to show that.

A long time ago, two brothers lost their father. A long time ago, a secret of a spy was revealed. A long time ago, a fight to the death occurred between two brothers... two brothers who were once thick as thieves. It was a rainy night, and Diluc was young and immature. He had just had to kill his own father and not long after did he receive a reality bending declaration. He just saw red. It's not something he's proud of. His baby brother came to him and all he could offer was death. As time passed and Diluc ventured on his journey of retribution, he reflected on his whole life and that one night was the thing he regretted the most, but what happened hurt. To find out your brother was a spy, only hours of discovering you no longer knew who your father was, broke him. Diluc couldn't handle any more betrayals so acted first and severed the bond he needed the most. So when he came back to Mond four years later to find a total stranger wearing his brother's face, he didn't know what other way to react besides indifference. He threw Kaeya away. Discarded him like trash; Diluc had no right to come crawling back like a pathetic beggar. They both made their mistakes and they had to live with the consequences. The two were just strangers. No longer brothers.
