Slowly turning the doorknob, Will swung open the door, seeing the ravenette standing on the other side, looking equally excited and anxious. Mike opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Will's shaky, "Hey Mike," he said, his voice cracking.
The ravenette's eyes softened, absorbing the brunette's anxious expression, quickly raising a hand to the air awkwardly smiling, "Hi."
The pair fell into an awkward silence for a moment, as Will decided to be the one to start talking, albeit with a weird question, "Was the trip here, okay?" he asked, mentally cursing himself for doing so; of course, the trip was okay, Mike had done it thousands of times before.
Mike's response did nothing to ease the awkwardness; his words tumbling out in a rush, "Yeah, I was sorta early because I didn't want to be late, but then I worried you might not be ready yet, so I stood in the bushes until now."
Will's brows furrowed as Mike waved his arms around, realising just how unintentionally creepy that sounded. He tried to clarify, but it only managed to make himself more flustered, "Uh, I mean, not in a creepy way." he hesitantly explained, "I was just making sure I wasn't too early and so I hid in the bushes for a few minutes, but not like a 'hiding in the bushes' hiding. More like 'standing next to them' hiding. Not that bushes are a good hiding space, really..."
The brunette couldn't help but laugh at the ravenette's nervous rambling, which prompted Mike to laugh too, allowing the tension to ease slightly, "Well next time I need to hide in anyone's bushes, I'll call you for tips."
Mike smiled in relief, "Let's just forget the bushes. So shall we get going?"
Will nodded, calling out, "Mum. I'm going!" he screamed.
However, to his surprise, Joyce rushed over to them, immediately launching herself into a diatribe of commands, "Make sure you stay safe, and look both ways before you cross the road, and call me if you need anything or a ride home. Remember curfew at 9:00," engaging them in her motherly concerns,
"Yes mum," Will smiled a tad nervous as Joyce hugged her son for a few seconds before letting go, but then, to everyone's surprise, Joyce also hugged Mike tightly, making Will blush furiously embarrassed.
A few moments later, Joyce let go, not mentioning the date to Mike, unsure if the ravenette was told that Joyce knew of their plans or if it was supposed to be a secret. She simply wanted their safety and wellbeing while secretly enjoying the sight of her son and his crush heading out for a special day. With a warm smile she wished them a good time, "You boys have a wonderful time today, and remember to have fun!" she said in a gentle tone, watching them with concern close to her heart.
The brunette blushed a deep shade of red, just wanting to get out of this embarrassing situation, trying to push Mike out the house, "We are going to go now. Love you mum, bye." He said shovelling Mike out the door,
"See you Mrs Byers," the ravenette replied equally as red as the brunette,
"Love you both!" she smiled, watching them depart from the house,
After walking a few steps away, Will looked over at Mike, his face flushed, "Sorry about that," he mumbled, "Mum's just overprotective,"
"It's alright, it's sweet." Mike couldn't help but lightly chuckle. "She knows this is a date, doesn't she?"
"Um..." the brunette nervously giggled, "I didn't mean to, she just saw your note and well..."
