“W-what is?” I said.
“You pushed me back.” Jessica said shrugging her shoulders. “Few people have done that. Including our little friend out there.”
She pointed a slender finger out the window where I saw the dark, chestnut haired girl I recognized so much now.
That was strange though. I hadn’t heard her at all… plus why was she on that tree anyway? It’s not like she’s the female version of Spiderman.
…
What the hell is wrong with me?
“Didn’t I tell you not to bite her?” I heard Zoë say as she entered the room through the window.
“Well, yeah. But I didn’t.” Jessica put her hands on her hips cockily, “You know. That’s what the stairs are for… unless you want to consider yourself an undeveloped homo sapiens.”
“I felt like taking the stairs was gerting boring AAAND don’t change the topic.” Zoë said while dusting off her pants. She looked up at Jessica, and then looked at me squinting. “Although let’s just get it done, alright?”
“Sure.” The blond curly haired girl snickered back.
Jessica retreated to the corner of the room where underneath a table was a long case. I recognize its shape to be a violin. That reminded me that she’s supposed to be the concertmaster. That one person who is in charge of the violins. Sits in the front row… and is next in rank after the conductor… which means I’m going to spend a lot of time with Jessica…
Oh god.
I am NOT willing to do this, and it was NOT my hormonal changes which were taking effect here.
“Alex.” Zoë called to me. My eyes moved to her and I saw how she had turned her whole face to me so the Jessica wouldn’t see it. It was a strange look that she gave me, almost as if she was trying to search something on my face or read my thoughts. That why when she said, “Just listen to her. Trust me.” I knew she was implying that I’d have to wait a little longer and then she’d leave.
“L-listen to her?” I stuttered back to her, “W-what do you mean?”
“I’ll play a piece for you,” Jessica called out as she lifted the violin up to her shoulder and chin so gracefully that I had no doubts she’d be good. “French girl.”
And she was.
Jessica started the melody off to Violin Sonata No 6 by Niccolo Paganini without the guitar accompanying her. It didn’t matter though, because I could hear the respective notes in my mind since I knew the song so well. The vibrations she was supposed to make and the speed were so well kept, and were so pleasant to my ears that I almost nearly forgot everything that had happened just moments before.
She closed her eyes for the last part which showed me how much she loved playing… convincing me of her talent. Not that I had to be convinced… Why would Zoë even make me listen to her if she knew she was good? I mean, she’s the conductor so the decision is not up to me.
The last note faded in the air as the three of us tried to listen to the last of the vibrations it had formed. I couldn’t hide my surprise but it wasn’t only due to the sound of Jessica’s playing but the fact that it struck me how I had never hears she could play the violin. I simply knew her as the school’s beauty while she was still in it.
“I know, I know.” Jessica said. She lowered her instrument and set one of her hands on her hips. “You just realized you didn’t know I could play the violin. No one does really or at least around here. Only my family.”
